Old telegraph station Tennant Creek by robz

Old telegraph station Tennant Creek

This was a part of the original string of telegraph stations built to link Darwin in the Northern Territory to Port Augusta in South Australia. The line followed the path mapped out by Stuart in a marathon exploration across Australia.
This station was built in 1872 and its structure, with wide covered verandahs and thick stone walls allowed the house to stay cool in the soaring temperatures. The small structure seen through the mesh was the cool room with underground storage for food.
Interesting. It looks like a bird or animal hide.

This structure reminds me of the Ramirez House I photographed last Fall- so innovative! And we think we're ahead of our time. These folks were light years ahead of us in their "natural" technology. Good shot!

@tinley23 You're so right Lesley, the screened verandahs allowed sights in but kept insects out.

@olivetreeann Hi Ann - how very true - this house was sooo cool inside - even though it was a pretty, dry day outside.

@joysabin So true Joy. And we still haven't cottoned on - most new homes over here are using black metal roofs and depending on air con to be livable!
