The Bower Bird had just finished creating a new bower to attract the ladies. Unlike bower birds in Qld - who prefer blue items - this fellow had decorated his verandah with assorted white items and stones.
His home was in the grounds of the old Durack family home. They were the original family in this far flung area and they built a sturdy stone house. Unfortunately, it would have been flooded when Lake Argyll was formed. However, it was painstakingly dismembered, moved to higher ground and reassembled.
Hi Corinne, Ann, Jane, Debbie, Diana and Helge - they are fabulous birds to watch - the ladies come and check out his bower - but then many of them break his heart and reject his offerings. It's like a Romance saga on TV - starring birds! If he is successful they mate in the bower but then the female has to build a nest off the ground for the eggs and raises the young by herself. The male just keeps on trying to attract more females!! :) Cheers Rob @corinnec@olivetreeann@jgpittenger@shutterbug49@ludwigsdiana@helstor365
@30pics4jackiesdiamond Hi Jackie - I was watching him for about 20 minutes from a distance of about 2m. He's quite used to people (as a lot of them tend to be) and had his nest in a garden at the Durack House. They are so much fun to watch - he has a circular section on his head which he can raise up into a bright pink crown of feathers when he's trying to impress - and he makes the weirdest noises too. Cheers Rob
