A Viking Stave Church. by robz

A Viking Stave Church.

This was fascinating. It dates back to approx the 1200's. At about that time the king of the vikings made what was basically a political decision and officially changed the religion of his country to Christianity. He caused hundreds of christian Stave Churches to be built. They were built from timber - huge posts which supported the frame of the church. They were beautifully decorated with hand painted murals and various viking items. Since that time most have been destroyed by fire - some accidentally and many purposely by local communities during the Plague in the 1400th century. This is one of the few remaining churches - services are still held and it is a very treasured part of the local community.
Wow! I love the photo and the history behind it. So fascinating.
