This is the Southern wall of Wilpena Pound, which is an oval shaped enclosure formed by overlapping mountain ranges with just a tiny entrance into the pound on the Eastern Side. They had rain here about 3 weeks ago and this image shows the area looking remarkably green. A 20 minute drive to the North takes you to Blinman - which has had no rain for 3 years and looks like a typical inland desert!
We would call this a desert here in Canada - this looks pretty dry and does not look like it would support much livestock.
Not great farmland unless you irrigate.
A wonderful landscape shot!
@rosie00 Hi Lesley - this is the outside of the pound - the inside has a natural spring and is quite different again. But you are right - the differences are so marked. Thanks for your interest. Cheers Rob
@jgpittenger Hi Jane - your garden images are always so green and I've never quite known where you lived. I googled Oregon - it looks to be a stunning place to live. And I realized that Portland was in your state - our girls visited there for a festival and were so impressed by it. If we do ever make it to the States we will definitely visit your beautiful area and hopefully say hello. It would be nice to meet in person. :)
@farmreporter Hi Wendy - thanks for your response. This area is basically borderline desert although it can sometimes get rain and look quite good. The early settlers first saw it in a 10 year rain period - it looked great - more and more people moved up here, then the dry came back - so this whole area North of Adelaide is now littered with abandoned stone homesteads. It is a sad but terribly interesting place to visit. Nowdays they run sheep if they can and depend mainly on bore water. Thanks for your interest. :)
@peadar Hi Peter - it is still borderline desert - but a bit of rain can make it look quite beautiful. Although the desert landscapes also have a beauty all of their own too. Thanks for your interest. Cheers Rob
