MOTHS IN FLIGHT by sangwann

MOTHS IN FLIGHT

Was in my garden to look for something interesting to capture and saw this black flying creature zig-zagging around my orange tree. Made many attempts with the high speed burst programme of my camera before I got this capture. When I put the photo in full size on my computer I realized there were two of them, one riding piggy-back on the other. Perhaps they were copulating in mid air.

This moth, in Maltese ‘Bahrija’ is endemic to Malta. Have tried to find something interesting about it on the ‘net but the only thing I found out is that it is a Tiger Moth, maybe also ‘Ruby Tiger Moth’ and that it grows up to 2cm.

When I saw them, the first thing that came to mind was the first space shuttle when it was still being tested. I remember that the shuttle used to be loaded on top of a Jumbo Jet with special holding equipment, taken far up in the earth atmosphere and let go from that height to glide down until it landed on a specially long runway.
thats a buety shot

tried to look for information but after searching the insect looks more of a black carpenter bee (bomblu iswed) that the white bahrija (Vapourer Moth) http://www.maltawildplants.com/!gfx/Nature/maltawildlife.php?species=Orgyia%20trigotephras&ext=_male&type=Male

Got it - it is the Megachile sicula (Tawny Mining Bee) - and there is no proper name in Malta for it - we just tend to call it Bahrija as it resembles the moth http://www.maltawildplants.com/!gfx/Nature/maltawildlife.php?species=Megachile sicula&ext=&type=
