It never crossed my mind to use this shot for today. I took it a few days ago and if had realised before I would have used it yesterday. Yesterday was Palm Sunday for the Christian world and what better way to show this than to show palm trees.
This is another part of the Sliema promenade with palm trees dominating the view. Palm trees grow very well in Malta but these last 2-3 years this particular type of palm trees has been ravaged by an insect which accidentally found it’s way to our island – they say from North Africa. You can see the effects in the empty planter holes as infected trees are cut down trying to avoid the insect from spreading to other trees – they would have been killed by the insect just the same. I think the insect is the Red Palm Weevil. Every effort to eradicate this insect from the Island have to date proved unsuccessful.
Thank you very much for looking and for your wonderful comments and the fav's on yesterday's picture.
what a beautiful picture for Palm Sunday. I have a palm in a pot that I was going to photograph but forgot until it was dark and too late. It is such a shame when insects or animals come into our country and destroy our flora and fauna. Hope they can find something for your Palm trees eventually.
Great capture of this nice promenade with palm trees .
A lot of trees are having it in Holland Mainly by imported illnesses or insects but also it`s a part of the deal (molds). I mean only the fittest survive.
It's usually a bad thing all the way around when something is introduced into the environment from someplace else. The Gypsy Moth was brought to the US in a similar fashion and it has decimated many areas. I hope they can figure out a way to stop the weevils. Nice shot.
