A look at the floor of the cathedral shows that it is covered by marble tombstones where important clergy and some of the old nobility of the islands are buried. The co-Cathedral of St John in Valletta has its floor similarly covered with artistic marble works. While those at St John’s were normally executed abroad, the greater part of those in the Mdina cathedral were produced by local artists and craftsmen. Ladies are not allowed to visit the cathedral with stiletto heels as these may damage the marble.
thank you very much for looking and for the wonderful comments, the fav's and for putting yesterday's picture on tp and pp. Very much appreciated.
A beautiful capture of the church`s floor. They did this in our country to but not so colorful. http://365project.org/pyrrhula/365/2013-05-18
I can carry two bike`s on the back side of the car. But for a afternoon this to much work and the equipment can easily be stolen on a parking place.
Do this only for holidays.
The floor is stunning but it really creeps me out to think people are constantly walking over the dead!! Great capture of the floor! I would think they could put a raised floor over the tombstones so that they would not be walked on. Like a glass raised floor. That way they could be viewed and honored at the same time! Oh well, just my opinion!! The photo is fantastic! FAV!
Thank you very much for the lovely and the fav. I understand the floor can be walked on during church services only. Many efforts have been made at St John's to find the best way to preserve the floor which is even more beautiful than this. Perhaps, in time, those methods of preservation will be adopted here, too.
