The Cittadella was surrounded by its medieval walls until in 1599 the Order of St John and Malta completely rebuilt the southern walls to strenghten the defences of its only gateway; the works were completed in around 1622. The northern walls are still medieval and are well defended by the contours of the land below.
This shot was taken from the cavalier above the ‘new’ bastions which you can see coming out like two horns to defend the Citadella gate.
The Citadella walls have for some years been going through a long process of re-enforcing and restoration as well as its surroundings and approaches. An interpretation centre has also been built in the ditch below the bastions – the cylindrical glass object is the elevator to the interpretation centre.
