From the fIfth day of our Athens holiday - 17th February, 2023.
I was looking forward to having a good look inside Orthodox churches and Piraeus presented me with a good opportunity to do so.
So this is Hagia Triada Cathedral meaning Sacred Cathedral Temple of the Holy Trinity. An amazing cathedral by all means, on the inside more than on the outside.
The church as it is today was inaugurated on May 17, 1964 but its construction was finally completed in 1979 . It did look very new to me. The original church was completed in 1845 but was completely demolished one hundred years later, on January 11 1944, during the bombing of the city of Piraeus by the Allies, resulting in the death of several people who had taken refuge there for protection. The church is built in Byzantine style with a capacity of 3,100 people.
