I was trying my hand at using the on camera flash since is was getting dark. I didn't want it to be obvious that a flash was used. I like the results because if made the background jet black and brought out the highlights on the tiny flowers.
Thank you all so much for all your marvelous comments and favs, placing my "Fox Tail" and "Grazing In The Grass" photos on the Popular Page! You are very kind!
Lovely Skip! Fav. Never a mistake to try the on-camera flash in situations like this.
Yes, in situations like this light at dusk, flash is great for sending backgrounds black. Not sure how you might have shot it, but in "M" driving the shutter up towards the fastest the camera will allow (probably something like 1/200 for the x-synch speed of your camera) and keeping the ISO low will do this nicely for many situations. The subject of course, lit by the flash, will not be affected of course. Your camera probably has some Av flash settings that will take care of this (a little) too.
@frankhymus - Thank you Frank for the suggestions for shooting. I will make a note on my smartphone so I will have it with me and try them the next time. I used shutter priority and set it for 1/90 of a second since my lens was set on 105 to try and keep everything in focus. I have noticed with my camera that when I use shutter priority the images tend to be darker than if I use aperture priority.
@skipt07 Could be. With "m" though, you can set a fast shutter speed and not have the aperture open up to narrow your focus field. Especially with flash, "M" usually works best for me, since I don't have the camera trying to adjust exposure to "correct" the background (or non flash lit) exposure. Good shooting...
Wow - quite a neat shot of this - almost like ragweed which I noticed starting to bloom here. So pretty to be such a nuisance. Great idea for the flash. Tried to follow your explanation so I might try those kind of settings - it's always pure luck for me.
You did achieve a great look for this plant using the flash. I think it works particularly well because the flower is yellow and really stands out against the background. I like the way shots such as this allow us to see the details- look how tiny the flowerets are! Good shot!
