The family on my porch is growing at an amazingly quick pace! The eyes are open and the baby hummingbirds are up and moving around in their tiny home. I don't think it will be long until they venture out into the new world.
What a delight to see how fast they're growing! May I add something (she asked rhetorically) that "sounds gross", but is highly fascinating, and a wonder of nature, actually... When they have to poop, they raise up and shoot over the side of the nest! This keeps the nest clean...maybe all baby birds do this... I've only watched baby hummers. Mother builds an amazing little nest and the babies already know to keep their rooms picked up!
Gawd. It looks pretty cosy in there. Great to be able to follow there progress and I had missed the fact that they were humming birds. For me, that makes them really special.
@jankoos Thanks, Jan. It's awesome until I get buzzed by a very protective mama. Those things scare the heck out of me when you don't know they're coming. I keep thinking a helicopter is attacking me!
@pixiemac Wow, I didn't know they are not present in the UK. That's unfortunate! Maybe we can send some over with the Prince and Princess on their next visit.
@Weezilou Very interesting, Louise! I guess that would explain the "decorations" on my walkway. As big as they are now, their little poopers hang out over the edge anyway now.
@kauaikris@888rachel@hinkkd@winshez Thank you ladies. My good fortune to have mama choose my porch for this amazing event. I used to have a mama swallow that would make a nest nearby (the same swallows that "come home" to the nearby San Juan Capistrano Mission), but unfortunately haven't seen her for a couple of years now. Equally fascinating.
@terryliv Thanks Terry - yep this might be the only time I can catch hummingbirds that aren't flitting about. They're almost as hard as butterflies to catch a photo of.
@lyndemc Thanks, Denise. I hope to be lucky enough to catch that. I happened to be able to witness the first flights of the swallows that hatched nearby a few years ago. Gotta love nature!
@joysfocus Survival is right, Joy. We have a large population of crows and I know they like to feast on the little guys. This one seems to be well out of the field of vision of the crows. Mama done good.
