A colleague of mine thinks this is a red bud tree, but we aren't sure. It's on campus, and I happened by it this afternoon. Another case of being glad I had my camera with me -- and the only reason is I'd hoped to see some wildlife of some kind to photograph from my get pushed challenge this week. On the tree, there are beautiful flowers on all its branches, but the weirdest thing is to see these great clumps of pink flowers growing on it's main trunk.
Gorgeous! It is indeed a red bud tree. So interesting how it blooms from the trunk. Love how you accomplished a black background here. It looks stunning!
Wow - yes - agree - red bud - my guess is that it has been pruned really hard - you can see there are really no branches. I wonder if they did this for the effect? It's striking to be sure.

Thanks Lisa, Jan, Katerina, and Jodi! Your favs and comments mean a lot. Lisa -- the building behind this tree has black windows with a dark steel frame. So I was able to shoot the section of the trunk that was against the black windows mostly, and then cloned out the little bit of steel that was still showing. I actually took the photo at 12:45 in really bright midday sun, stopped down as much as I could. And I stood in the shade as best I could.
Thanks also for confirming it's a red bud tree!
Thank you all so much! I'm glad you found this as weird and interesting as I did! And your comments on the background made it worth getting under the nearby tree to get the black windows positioned well. I so appreciate your viewing and your encouraging comments.
@amandal Thanks Amanda @espyetta Thanks MaryBeth. The pink really was that bright too. So odd! @pdulis Thanks Peter @breigh Thanks Breigh -- and like you, I'd never seen this before (and I've walked by that tree at least a few times every year for the past 10 years!)
