A break from the decaying church and back to Chicago. My get-pushed challenge this week from @zam is a spontaneous street portrait. I hope this counts! We live in an area of the city called Little Italy, near the downtown but a kind of world away. This is a scene almost directly in front of our house. On really hot days or evenings, someone in the neighborhood opens the fire hydrant ostensibly so kids can play in it and cool down. The scene tonight is typical. Across the street, you can see neighbors visiting in their chairs in front of their apartments. I know that over the years, there have been efforts to stop the free-flow of water, but it's never really taken hold. At 8:30 p.m. it was 92 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to be a record-breaking 96. What happened to the transition to fall?
Taken with my very own, not rented, nifty 50 which arrived this evening!

Beautiful, crisp capture. We cannot afford such luxury here but a few paces away we have the beautiful sea to cool off. I'll be going there in a few minutes after finishing commenting.
Great shot!! Sounds like you live in a great community! Running water like that wouldn't happen here as we are always either in drought or heading that way so have water restrictions!
Great shot. It is a perfect expression of hot urban summer. Yesterday we reached 100 and it is suppose to be just as bad today but then it is suppose to cool down. This will be coming your way.
Yay for the 50! Congrats Taffy. Fantastic first shot. I thought the water hydrant thing only happened in old movies, it's interesting to find out it still happens. Here in Oz...we would all be in shock if water was wasted like this though. We have had many years of drought so saving water is an ingrained attitude now.
Love the colors and great use of the narrow depth of field! Great, atmospheric shot. Schools up here in Wisconsin cancelled school early yesterday from the heat, yikes!
Goodness, that's really hot - poor you! This is great - the water spray and the warm yellows really give a feeling of summer. I like the people sitting in the background too.
@zam Thanks Zam. It's fun looking for ops to do this. I loved your drinking shot -- so perfect! Did you tag it for get-pushed? We'll be in San Francisco this weekend so I may have better chances there when I'm not at work all day.
@jodimuli You'd think! It was on today as I left for class and then still on tonite when I came home. BUT, at least tonite there were kids playing in it.
This is cool! I cannot believe they can still do that in this day and age. And I also cannot believe it is that it up there. Down here in GA we have on,y gotten into very low 90s this summer and fall about twice. We have been having highs around 85 or so. Lovely angle, focus, processing on this pic.
@espyetta It's a new version of my older one which talked to my D90, but won't talk to my D600. It's apparently a problem with the very old model -- you can get it to talk to it, but then the aperture settings aren't accurate. UGH. So, I figured I'd do without. But...it's so perfect on a full frame, that after renting one for 5 days, I started tracking eBay to get a used one. Funny how these totally luxury purchases seem to become necessities!
What a wonderful capture - I love everything about this shot!! Instant Fav!! I have only ever seen this in a movie and didn't realise it actually happened!! Wonderful!!
You mean they actually moved their lawn chairs out of their parking places? lol.
Shots like this make me miss Chicago. This just doesn't happen in smaller towns. Fav!
Congrats on the new lens.
