Since the new theme, Throwback Thursday, is starting today, I found myself thinking about all the different meanings it might have. Given that I've many more architecture photos that I'd like to share from my recent photo walks as part of Chicago's Architectural Foundation Open House, I thought this one was most fitting for the theme. This grand old station is barely used, but at one time was a key transportation crossroad for people moving east and west across the United States. It's been restored architecturally, but it can't compete with the busy main station across the street or the midwest serving commuter station a few blocks north. I like the way the stairs frame the colums. And you can see how huge the waiting area is.
Thanks to all who have commented. I'll catch up this weekend, but for now am crazily trying to get much work done (and hopefully sufficient sleep for the drive) before we head north early tomorrow to Beaver Island to close up for the winter. Hoping for some fall images up there without too much of the rain that's forecast! A good weekend to you all!
Such grand columns to mark the grand space . . . that architectural open house is producing great photographs in your albums! Safe travels and good photography for the weekend! I'm quilting.
Beautiful lines, simmetry and architecture. Pity this station is barely used...
That photo walk must have been very inspiring...I would have loved to take part in it!
Have a nice weekend!
Wow what a beautiful building what a shame it's not used as much as it was. Love the columns and the lines of the stairs framing the scene!! Safe journey and have a great weekend at Beaver Island - I hope you get some good shots!!
It is certainly Throw back Thursday for me. I was in that station every work day for over two years. Took the train in from Clarendon Hills and the subway to Cook County Hospital. Lots of memories!
Awesome architectural details! I was hoping to have time to pop in before my train back on Sunday, but it didn't work out that way. Have a good trip up north!
So much history in those walls! So glad they worked to restore it rather than destroy it. Hope the weather was good for your weekend work on Beaver Island.
