I took this on Saturday on the way home from the greening of the river, knowing that I wanted to use it for black and white Wednesday this week. I processed it today using Nik Silver Efex and then tweaked the contrast a bit in Aperture. The title comes from the fact that Macy's (of NY) bought Marshall Field's -- Chicago's iconic department store since the early 1900s. There was much controversy over the renaming from Field's to Macy's as clearly there were many choices for maintaining the link to the original name. But arrogantly, Macy's ignored all ideas and pleas. So for my own satisfaction, I still refer to the store as Field's (and many of us Chicagoans still do), and I only shop there if something is on sale! But I love the architecture of this wonderful building. At the holidays, they put a tree in this center area that goes from the floor up to the 11th floor restaurant. It's quite spectacular. Also a six word story...

@taffy I've been playing around with flipping reflected images in water like your wonderful shots and was wondering if you would mind if I posted one. Giving you credit for the idea of course.
@moxy Oh gosh, Shelley, flipped shots were not my idea at all. I saw others posting them last year and thought they were wonderful. What I do sometimes (but not always), is if I am inspired by a particular person, I just say so in the commentary, but mostly because I want them to know I learned from them. You've already done that here for me, and I certainly don't deserve credit for the idea. I'm so glad my shots gave you ideas -- that's the absolute best form of flattery I can imagine as a photographer!! I can't wait to see it -- so tag me when you post so I can be sure to see it (I have family coming in so won't be able to do as much viewing as I get ready for their arrival tomorrow -- and then time together over the weekend) -- I don't want to miss it.
Well, A Fav because I always loved *Fields* since I was a little girl (taking the train to Chicago with my grandmother for lunch in the Walnut Room) and again because I'm happy to be in the crowd who will never think of it as other than Marshal Fields! It was always a destination each time I visited my daughters in Chicago, but I don't believe I've been there now in years. Macy's? eh...we've got one of those, too...nothing special anymore! (However, your photo of the beautiful architecture takes me back to the good ol' days...)
Thank you for sharing, and I really like the perspective in this one as well the processing, the lines are pulling me in but my mind is not sure is it upwards or straight ahead that I feel moving, intriguing and that silver-ish tone on your b&w processings are fantastic!
What a beautiful building Taffy I love this old style so elegant! Great job and as usual wonderful processing! I can understand you feeling sentimental about the name - what a shame they decided to change it! That's big business for you! Stunning B&W image! Good luck with the comp! Fav!
Yep, just like they still call Istanbul Constantinople!! Joking aside, though, this is a great shot, love the perspective, and all the details in the building. Very fitting in B&W, as it probably harkens back to the time when it was still Marshall Fields....
Very special and interesting story...and even a better picture. This is really a superb POV, and your processing is outstanding: such lovely tones, strong contrast and fantastic clarity. Fav
Great shot Taffy and I very much enjoyed your story. I also have a few things that for me will always be what I knew them as when I was younger. I think I may try and get out with my camera sometime in the next week to make this exact point over something locally.
@peerden How exciting! How long will you be in Chicago? That should be a good time of year -- let me know if you'd like recommendations for what to photograph while in town.
Bravo and Fav!
This is a wonderful shot. Such detail in B&W! Love the pov, too.
