This is a summer home on Lake Geneva. We saw so many incredibly gigantic estates along the lake that I'm not sure which one this one is -- I think it's the Wrigley compound and one of the houses on it, and if I remember the story correctly that the boat's pilot/guide told us, this is going to be the guest house, when the main house is completed next door. All in all, the excess was over the top on this whole section of the lake. It's where the founding families of Chicago spend their summers, so a lot of the names were recognized for buildings (e.g., Palmer, Wrigley) and streets (e.g., Wacker) in Chicago. Most of the original buildings dated from the early 1900s, though there were a number of more recent ones as well. Taken on an evening boat tour after working hard all day at our leadership retreat.
Thanks for your wonderfully positive response and favs for my reflection shot yesterday! I was so glad to know you'd liked it as it was unusual processing for me to try.
The light is gorgeous and makes a wonderful photo.. The over-the-top buildings are fun to see, but I really wouldn't want something like this. I think Allison has a point. A narrower format would emphasize the widely spread compound of buildings. @falcon11.
I'm almost reluctant to fav this ohoto because of all the opulence here. However ....... it is a fab photo! I thought at first it was lit by late evening sun but no, it's probably all floodlit. What a waste!
@busylady I agree re the over the top opulence, Judith. It was so hard to imagine why anyone would need that kind of space. One place on the lake had an indoor miniature golf course! THis one was taken at sunset so even though the house was empty and all lights off, the sun hitting it made it glow like that. By the time we were off the lake it was dark and almost no lights could be seen in any of these houses as they are summer houses for these folks. I can't even imagine that kind of waste of living space for most of the year!
Oh my...thought it was your home at first.....just kidding! Oh well...one of those "small" wings would do me just fine. If had that kind of money I would rather spend on a several homes in different parts of the world...or just travel and give the rest away!! Such an amazing capture. Looks like it could be cover for "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous"...
Lovely, well composed and well exposed picture. I like your slight underexposure and the grading of the light from left to right. Would you consider some dodging of the leafless trees, or do you think that it would overpower the house?
@ericdibosco I thought the light was tricky to get it 'right' (in my eyes, obviously) and decided not to mess around with the trees at all because any adjustments brought too much attention to it. The lighting is so subtle in the way it changes from top to bottom that adjustments, to me, ended up not being worth it.
