Japan, Day 2. We happened on this at a tiny train station in the western side of Kyoto, after a full day of morning walk in Narita (suburb of Tokyo near airport), bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, photographing one of the original Shogun castles (from the 1100s), the bamboo forest, an expansive wooden bridge. The display was quite magical and filled the entire station. We were there just after a downpour so were fortunate to have the addition of the reflections. This was the main entrance pathway.
I can tell I'll be woefully behind, given both limited time and very limited internet. I will keep posting as I can, so that I don't flood the thread when I'm back, but commenting isn't likely. Thanks for understanding!
This is so COOL! Are those made from real kimono? Have you ever read Memoirs of a Geisha? It is not really a memoir, but pure fiction based on the research this man from Chattanooga, TN did....but it is good. There is alot about how important the kimono were the Geisha Houses....and how they lived in fear of fire. It's a good book. And this a GREAT photo! I love the walkway! fav
Fabulous shot, beautiful colours, reflections and light contrasting with the black. If I may make a suggestion, maybe clone out the lights in between the first three columns on the left? Enjoy your stay in Japan
Such a gorgeous image Taffy!! Love the colours, the leading curve, the light, the reflections - all put together - stunning!! I bet this was lovely to see. Fav!
Spectacular shot and a fav! We went to Japan two years ago and loved it, especially Kyoto. The blossom was awesome as we were there in May. I've just been going through my Japanese photos today as I've promised to do an illustrated talk in a couple of weeks.
Haven't been to Japan yet, so will look forward to all your posts from there. Have a great time! This is a fantastic shot. The lighting is really well captured.
Amazing...and very well photographed. You have managed to use a very good vantage point and curving line to lead into the picture. And the reflections really rounds it off nicely. Lovely picture!
Beautiful! Just beautiful! I love scrolling down your comments list and seeing that so many people enjoy your beautiful travel photos! Your photos "speak to us" and we hear that you're having an amazing time, gathering more to share, so it's understandable you don't have time to sit around at the computer! I can easily forgo comments when you offer up the likes of this instead!
Wow, what an amazing shot, Taffy. Love all the colors, reflections and look like it never ends. It is so wonderful to have you share a bit of your trip now. Have a great time. I would not be commenting either, I would be taking photos and site seeing. FAV
FAV -- This is spectacular -- and I can say that with authority because I was there and I know how most photos taken there had a reflection off the plastic covering all the fabric poles. Beautiful!
@espyetta Hi MB -- late in responding to your questions....I loved Memories of a Geisha! It was one of my favorite books the year I read it. I don't know if the display is from real kimonos or from kimono fabric or using some kind of print on a more permanent material. All the tubes had a sheer plastic coating so to the touch, it felt like plastic rather than fabric -- and it was outdoors so had to withstand storms. With all descriptions in Japanese, I'm sure I'm missing a lot of details about what I'm seeing! And even Junko and Michael weren't aware in advance that this was here. We really just happened on it.
I'm catching up with my views and comments so seeing your Japan shots in reverse order. There seems to be an excellent theme of perspective using convergence. This one of course makes great use of colour and reflections.
@anazad511 Thanks so much Ana! I didn't realize it was Friday (jet lag playing tricks) so you are the one who let me know -- many thanks for your kind words!! Now off to look at the others. Very exciting!
The colors are so vibrant, the whole scene is so surreal. I assume that it's columns wrapped in fabric, but it also looks like they could just be digital images on a column. Very intriguing.
@anjoso@sullivar@skipt07 Thanks for visiting this one Andy, Ryan, and Skip. I really appreciate it. It was such a beautiful place -- and Ryan, I think it was actual fabric sealed in a type of plastic that was very clear and clean.
@aliha Thanks so much, Alison! I was so fortunate to have been able to go to Japan this summer. It was really an amazing experience, and do it as a photo trip was incredible.
@aliha That's how I feel about virtually every place I've traveled! If only I could do it now that I know what I know about photography...such missed opportunities!
@taffy yep I hear you! We are planning a trip to NZ soon and I am very excited! Limited budget and constraints with kids but I'm trying to suss out at least a one-day landscape workshop while I'm there :)
@aliha Oh, that's going to be wonderful -- there's so much there to photograph! To do a workshop there would be awesome. The south island was so beautiful but I didn't know enough about photography to capture it well. And the north island has so much cultural history. Have a great time.
@taffy Yes this will be my fourth trip there. I actually remember the exact spot (at a small lake on the road between Te Anau and Milford, on our last trip 6 years ago) that my husband first asked me if I would be interested in purchasing a "good" camera and doing a course like the one his mum had done … he had no idea what he was starting!! Hehe :)
@aliha That's funny -- so you're visiting the 'scene of the crime'! I'm going to be in Australia in October and am hoping to be able to do some photo stuff between work.
@taffy Oh! I hope it's not while we're planning to be away? You said you would be in Brisbane right? It would be great to meet up :) Tell me the dates again?
@aliha So, here's the embarrassing thing...I fly through Brisbane, but I'm actually in Cairns for the week. I'm so disappointed as I'd actually been following all your photos to see where I'd want to photograph and it wasn't until a few weeks ago when I set up my flights that I realized the school is in Cairnes. So, I'm in Brisbane for a few hours, and that's it -- at the airport. My challenged geographic knowledge shows through! I'll also be in Adelaide for about a week, and fly out of Sydney so have an overnight there and hope to get together with at least one other 365er the night before I leave. I'm SO excited but disappointed about Brisbane!
@taffy Oh, Cairns is lovely, as is Adelaide although they are completely different! I think the best thing to do in Adelaide is visit a winery or two, not far out of town. A sunset at Glenelg doesn't go astray either :) I have spent very little time in Sydney but the beaches are quite spectacular (and you get a great view from the plane!)
@aliha Thanks for the tips! I'm keeping a list. I know we'll get to the wine area -- my host (friend and former student) is checking out which ones would be the best for us to visit, knowing photography is as high on my list as the quality of the wine!
Wow 103 favs! You have taken some extraordinary photographs since I have been following you Taffy, I am surprised this one is your most faved image! I faved this originally so I can't fav it again!
@skipt07 Thanks, Skip! I was surprised as well as it wouldn't have been one I thought of immediately -- the one that I thought would have more is from NYC, the 9/11 memorial. But, that had tons more views but not as many favs.

That would make a stunning large print against a black background.
