The artist challenge this round is honoring David Hilliard - http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/22942/new-artist-challenge-david-hilliard for more information. A characteristic style of his work is three-photo triptychs of a single photo, separated by white borders. I thought that would work well with this shot (my third attempt at the artist challenge format) as my get-pushed partner, Penny @pennyp asked me to focus on shadows. We haven't had a ton of sun, but this gave me the chance to emphasize the butterfly and the beach thistle's shadows, giving one its own frame, and letting the other share a frame with its source. Thinking in terms of triptychs, lensbabies (not for this shot), and artists' challenge, along with my get pushed, was great for pushing me to think differently. And, it's not a sunset!
Hopefully I'm improving on these...

Lovely! I, too, like the sunset split across frames. Also, in the Hilliard style, I like the dry lifeless rocks of the two outside frames contrasted against the vibrancy and hope of the butterfly.
@joemuli Picmonkey has a collage function that worked perfectly - just choose 'ducks in a row' and click on the 3 photo choice. It's pretty intuitive. And free.
Another interesting one. Love how the flow goes from empty to butterfly then plant.
I'm still trying to work out if in his work he always uses three subtly different shots or if they are one shot? Never mind, its fun trying his style I guess!
I like how you have framed each piece of the triptych and you have some strong shadows, too. I going to try a triptych for my sunflowers now. Glad you enjoyed the challenge, being out of you comfort zone is a great way to improve skills - and passion.
This is gorgeous for the challenge Taffy, I wish I had done more of these as I really like the results they are producing. Oh well I think I may have time to do some more, I am amazed at all the challenges you do on here, where do you get the time? btw are you still going to Camera Club when you are in Chicago? I suppose I am concentrating on external competitions so that's where my time goes, it seems never ending at the moment. Camera club tomorrow and it's Letters and Numbers and I am struggling to come up with 8 photos so I need to concentrate on that.
@elaine55 Thanks so much Elaine! My life is so different when I'm on Beaver Island. No meetings except by phone or Skype, no teaching, no errands to speak of, sort of in the middle of nowhere. And most of my work involves being at my computer so it's tempting to check in on the site where I then notice the challenges. I've been so bored with my own photography that having the themes/challenges and lensbaby has really helped me stay with it.
@elaine55 I feel like my rut now is sunsets/bugs/flowers! I find it interesting that so many of us on the site seem harder on ourselves than others are on us!

Have you tried to put them all together, in a 3x3 square, to see how it looks?
