My get-pushed partner this week, Jo @joeymc challenged me to experiment with negative space (or to photograph a stranger, but so far I haven't been able to find one on Beaver Island!). I took this late afternoon, spot metering on the flowers which which made the background fairly dark. I upped the black point and some contrast, then cloned out the few remaining stray intruders into the scene. Best on black.
Thanks for your wonderful comments on the fireworks shots!
Just for fun --

@vickisfotos Last week there were a lot as the music festival, Baroque on Beaver, was here, plus a 'meet the artists' day had a lot of wonderful looking strangers to photograph. But this week...so far, haven't seen a soul I didn't already know!
Very effective use of negative space, and it really must be viewed on black! I am curious: Why did you decide to include the paler stem on the left, rather than using only the 3 main ones placed more on a third?
Joining the choir, above, re the black background, the color and the light. I like the little straggler on the left. Thanks for explaining how you did it.
Great light, love the vibrant colours. The little flower spike isn't ugly at all, of course but to my fevered imagination this does look rather like the swans in the story of the Ugly Duckling pointing to it and telling it to get out of town!
@dulciknit This is such a cool interpretation and SO different than what I'd been thinking! I saw the 'trio' as singers and the little thing as the microphone! Eric @ericdibosco asked why I had kept it in and that's why...there were two there, and I cloned out one of them so it would look like their mic. And no one I think has seen it that way. Interesting! I laughed at the idea of the trio being 'mean girls'.
@darsphotos Thanks for the fav, Darlene. The flowers about about 4" high I think...not very big. I think they are called spirea or something like that.
@taffy They are really small. My favorite color. I will look them up. Thank you. Sad, just read about Maggiemae's sister who passed today. I feel for her being here in the states so far from home.
