Triple Super Moon by taffy

Triple Super Moon

Two days of clouds so the only photos I have of the super moon are from Friday night when Junko @jyokota and I drove into town to capture the moon over the lake. We got there too late for that as the moon was too high, so instead, I practiced with spot metering and settings to try the show the moons shadows and craters. None were exactly what I wanted. Tonight when I went back to the images, I thought a collage might make them look more interesting. I'm not sure what causes the slight changes in color. To the naked eye, the moon was a bit golden-orange.
Fav! Times three gives the images such power! Repetition?

Incredible collage.

Looks pretty good to me...we had cloud/rain the last few day's so no super moon here...

Beautiful

Great shots

From our side of the pond it was really white, how odd. Great set of moon shots.

The three together make a great triptych! We were clouded out so
I'm happy yo see these!

As Sarah said the moon here was like a huge spotlight in the sky and the garden looked like daylight. Love the beautiful tone of your shots.

Awesome set!

Great collage, I had the same problem with clouds, but did experiment with shutter speeds. I may have to give this a go. Funnily enough my moon is the other way around, the large crater is at the top, or you could say mine is upside down from being downunder :)

Lovely triptych, Taffy. The variance in colour may be caused by very slight variance in exposure, slight underexposure giving a more saturated effect which intensifies the colour.
August 12th, 2014
Awesome! Love the different colors!
August 12th, 2014
This works well
August 12th, 2014
I'm in awe as I've never managed a moon shot! Good idea to do the triptych.
August 12th, 2014
beautiful, love the different (even if unexplained) colour variances
August 12th, 2014
Great triptych. One day I'll manage to get a good shot of the moon, but I think I need a better camera. Still the one I've got is better than the phone I started the project with.

cool triptych. nice one taffy
August 12th, 2014
cool collage - and we had clouds for the nights we could have seen the moon
August 12th, 2014
Very cool collage!! Like how you can see the craters, think you did a good job :)
August 12th, 2014
Amazing, stunning
August 12th, 2014
Great detail of the moon's surface in these three shots. I took two shots - not as good as yours - with the same slight changes of colours.
August 12th, 2014
You know what amazes me about this super moon is I never noticed that crater(?) on the bottom that makes it look like a beach ball. Just me with my weird impressions.
August 12th, 2014
Very nice collection :-)
August 12th, 2014
Brilliant collage. I am still trying to capture a decent Supermoon image, the overcast skies are not helping here.
August 12th, 2014
Nice moon details
August 12th, 2014
Well done, I don't even bother to take moon shots anymore. I just look at everybody's on 365 instead.
August 12th, 2014
wonderful
August 12th, 2014
I really like how this moon series shows the slight variations that timing must make on the captured image.
August 12th, 2014
@joansmor I agree!! I had never noticed til I started doing moon shots on 365. At first, I thought there was something wrong with my camera! I think it looks like a peeled orange.
August 12th, 2014
@ericdibosco That could be Eric, as I was using spot metering, and even on the tripod, I know that I moved it a tad each time.
August 12th, 2014
@karlow75 Oh fun! I'll have to see if there's a full moon when I'm in Australia in October -- I didn't know the moon would look different though of course, if the constellations vary, so would the moon!
August 12th, 2014
Great capture super moon.
August 12th, 2014
Beautiful shots:-)
August 12th, 2014
Lovely triptych of the supermoon, variations in colour might be caused by non-equal exposures or white-balance (was it on auto?)
August 12th, 2014
@leonbuys83 I did have it on auto-WB. Thanks for the visit and comment, and a reason for the color variation.
August 12th, 2014
Very nice! I got some shots the first night but forgot and missed the horizon images I really wanted. Last night it was cloudy!
August 12th, 2014
You are such an inspiration with your constant efforts at trying and learning new techniques and approaches. You're an inspiration, I assure you. These moon shots are all interesting in their color variance and details. I missed the super moon thanks to cloud cover. Thanks too for the comment and suggestion shared on the view of my world here in western IL. I've been mulling over your series idea ever since reading your note. Appreciate the idea.

@lyndemc Thanks Denise -- that is such a wonderful thing for you to write. I'm so glad that you think I've been helpful!

Tripple wow!!
August 12th, 2014
Amazing!
August 13th, 2014
Nice collage! As I'm still learning EVERYTHING! my first thought for the color variation was that it had to do with either the exposure or WB. How fun to see the experts suggesting the same things! Maybe I am learning something after all. I was recommended to set my camera on AV and go with the default settings. I also watched a couple YouTube tutorials which basically recommended ISO 100 or 200 with the WB set on daylight and aperature at f11 or f8. One tutorial also recommended playing around with the WB saying that setting this to tungsten, fluorescent and a few others would result in different colors on the moon (one was blue, one was purple and I forget the rest- sorry!). I know you'll figure that out because you always seem to have a handle on these things! The next super moon is Sept. 9 so you'll have time to study up! In the mean time- nice job on the collage!!

Wow, these are amazing shots and a wonderful collage, Taffy. I love the detail you captured. FAV
August 13th, 2014
good collage, we have not been able to see it all
August 13th, 2014
Neat collage.
August 13th, 2014
It is nice to know I'm not the only one that had "odd" hued moon shots! The majority of mine were very similar in color to yours, it was a really yellow/orange moon Sunday night here. Unfortunately it's been cloudy and rainy since so I haven't been able to try again. Love this in the collage with the variations.
August 13th, 2014
The three-of-a-kind design is lovely. You captured the super moon so well! I like the burnished look to it.
August 13th, 2014
Neat triptych Taffy. I have never been able to capture a decent shot of the moon so I admire your efforts. The spot metering and exposures will cause the variation I think. I used spot metering yesterday on a bird and I could see the difference in the camera although I haven't downloaded the shots on to the computer yet.
August 13th, 2014
really nicely presented!!!
August 13th, 2014
Rolf, we have too much imagination.
August 13th, 2014
Fabulous super moon triptych! Beautiful details!
August 13th, 2014
Great idea for a triptych, nicely done. I'm intrigued by the colour variations. I had a go at shooting the moon a couple of nights ago and used three different shutter speeds but the colour was uniform. I had the WB on daylight (I shoot RAW but still choose my WB in camera).
