While we get to go back to Beaver Island this weekend, we've definitely relocated back to Chicago as our base. So today I wanted to take a photo of something iconically Chicago. The Water Tower is one of the two main buildings that were not destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Chicago_Fire). I've posted it before from another angle but didn't realize with my wide angle I could actually get the whole building from this (non-street) side. The fire destroyed most of the city, but the rebuilding effort left a great legacy -- the emphasis on architectural innovation and beautiful structures throughout our city.
Wow, unfortunately never been to Chicago but would love to see this building, its so interesting. Does returning to the city mark the end of summer for you?
I had an uncle move from Ulster to Chicago with his family but by the time I had the money to travel uncle Wilie had died and everyone else came back to Ireland and only Renee went back to marry her sweetheart.she lives in Pickerington Ohio with her daughter and grandchildren and when I visited the states I spent 3 days with her. She said our itinerary should have included Chicago as there was some marvellous architecture . Wikipedia has attributed this to the innovative rebuild after the fire. How great that this building survived. I love the way it's juxtaposed against the very modern skyscraper
Great capture and POV. So different from today's typical water towers (or at least in my neck of the woods). Before reading the caption, I thought I was looking at a church.
@dibzgreasley Exactly...summer starts for me, not on a date, but when we move up to Beaver Island. Then, it's over when we move back to Chicago to start the academic year. I know according to the weather it's still summer, but it sort of doesn't count now that we are officially back at work!
@joemuli You'd love it here -- there's the beach for your beach photos and lot of other street stuff you'd have fun photographing. And the design side of Chicago is fantastic.
@ceilidh It's too bad you didn't make it here. Chicago really is a special city on many levels, and the people here are very midwestern friendly, despite it being a large city.
@ericdibosco Thanks Eric. I can't believe I used to regret having bought this lens. It took me a long time to learn how to use it, but now, it's one of my favorites in the city and even in some situations in more rural settings.
@taffy What lens exactly is yours? My WA is a 10-20 Sigma (for Canon) which I had the opportunity to use in Switzerland and NYC...unfortunately only bought it after my visits to Italy, but I really need to go back there with it!
Fabulous old building and looking great against the sky scraper! I love your Chicago shots Taffy! You have made me put it high on my list if I ever get the chance to visit the USA.
The water tower is great but I especially like how you have captured the sunlit, almost ghostly block in the background, it says to me "I'm the future!"
I bet there is a lot of old and new architecture in Chicago. Look forward to seeing some of it in your project and familiarizing myself with this city.
Super mix of old, new and a splash of nature. It has been a real joy to follow your work and have your support and encouraging comments Taffy. Many thanks. Keep doing what you do - you do it superbly!
I was wondering if you might perhaps take the lead if ever questions should come up re the mentoring system in the future? Your enthusiasm and approach is definitely inspirational. All the best. x
This is beautiful - and love that you were able to get the more modern building for contrast while still keeping the focus on the older one. It has some great detail.
Great architecture and history too, what more can one ask? I know hardly anything at all about Chicago and will enjoy seeing some of your shots from your city. I'm particularly interested in your use of a WA lens, I'm probably being a tad slow, but I'd never considered using my UWA Canon 10-22 for built environment. Now I'm all excited at the prospects it offers. Many thanks.

Got to get myself one!
