Two days of travel, some drama with late flights and tight connections, little sleep in cramped airline seats, but have arrived in Cairns safe and sound and ready for sleep in a real bed! To stay awake, I did a totally predictable thing -- a photo walk around town. It's almost 8:00 p.m. which was my goal for staying awake, though closer to 5:00 a.m. my time after a sleepless night.
This photo is of a quiet section of an esplanade that goes around Cairns 'city' and wharf areas, in sort of a u-shape. Near my hotel, it's very active and busy, with a gigantic public pool, then the wharfs/shops/restaurants. This scene was further away, past some piers in what appeared to be a fairly posh area of high end hotels and restaurants.
This is a composite of three images, combined in Photomatix, then processed to soften the HDR with Color efex. One more document photo to process of the view at night from my hotel room balcony and then off for what I hope will be 10 hours of sleep!

@judithdeacon Thanks Judith! One of my hosts from the school and I had tea this afternoon to discuss the week's plans. We were right on the main drag and it was the antithesis of this scene! Lively, tons of people in swimwear walking around, people playing in the swimming pool, sunbathing, etc. I walked about an hour and a half and this was one of the only areas that had almost no people.

@redpants Thanks Sue! I'm in Cairns til next Wed, with an overnight in Brisbane tomorrow. Then to Adelaide with an overnight in Barossa Valley, and then an overnight in Sydney before heading home. So tripping around for sure! Cairns is really beautiful and a relaxing area.
@taffy ~ I haven't been to Cairns myself, but I hear its great. Adelaide is lovely, its called the city of churches & the Barossa is beautiful. If you have time in Sydney, over night I know, maybe I could meet you for a drink.
