Three Perspectives: Newberry Card Catalogue by taffy

Three Perspectives: Newberry Card Catalogue

For our mentor/critique group charged with focusing on one object from three perspectives. Photos were taken at the Newberry Library in Chicago, filled with old-fashioned card catalogues that, with the advent of computers, have pretty much disappeared from most libraries. There was something quite lovely about being surrounded by these beautifully maintained wood cabinets. They really fit the library's environment.

Here you go! I had a different plan but decided these old-fashioned card catalogues were worth working with. I love this theme -- it's making me rethink how I look at an area where I've taken multiple images and I'm seeing things I wouldn't have otherwise thought about!

The way you put this together is fabulously architectural and artistic. It's so much more than a collage—it's a photographic sculpture. Fave.

I really loved these old card catalogue boxes... they are so symmetrical and each card contains a little bit of the person who created it. Wonderful lines, of course!

Perhaps they could be used for something else! So neat and orderly!

Awesome picture. Congratulations on making the Trending Page. Well deserved.

This is really fascinating - love how you worked it all together. Those perspectives are really neat. Didn't know libraries even had card catalogs any more - especially ones so nicely preserved. Your focus in each shot is terrific.

I love these things! I had a job at a library and one of my favorite duties was putting the cards in alphabetical order in the card catalog!

Love the dds and the cards.....amazing we had to use our head to find what we needed...

Beautiful capture!

Great images for a great collage.
February 17th, 2015
Wow, I didn't think libraries still had these card catalogs any more.

This looks fantastic. What a real treasure to still have these around. And it has been beautifully shot as well. A big fave.

Boy..those were the days!!! What a great capture. I am sure some of 365 members have never seen these! Awesomely put together collage.

God, that brings back so many memories! Back in college I used to work at the Art History library for extra money, and really loved those card catalogs! Everything is digital now, and just like ebooks the touchy feely part is gone!

Outstanding photos and collage...love the perspective in each one

Outstanding shots well formed into a single thoughtful and meaningful collage! I like it!

I love the perspective of this collage and the repetition, quite a work of art. The younger generation won't even know what they are. I heard a child a couple of weeks ago ask "What's that" when she pointed to a public telephone kiosk. I wonder how many kids are asking the same here.

@squamloon Wow, Jim. Thank you so much -- what a lovely comment!

@onewing You're so right about this -- I know that these 'antiques' will be curiosities only in the future. Even I was surprised to see them in use.

nicely done taffy

This collage is so well put together! It took more time and effort to do research back in the day by searching through the index cards.Imagine actually having to go to the library instead of looking just something up on your phone,

Love this shot .These old card indexes are so interesting and much better than computer files. This shot makes me feel quite nostalgic

This is such a terrific subject to pick for the 3 pictures of 1 thing. These bring back lots of memories of time spent in libraries, researching projects. I like how you have shown us the larger view of the whole things, then getting closer and closer to a draw.

Such a great collage showing the 3 views of the card index - perfect for our theme this week. I think that this is probably more along the right lines than my effort!! Love this Taffy - what a find - memories of going to the library when I was young and asking for a book and the librarian looking through the card index. Nothing as grand as this though!! Fav!!

Oh, that is why one of your group did that artist from three perspectives. What a cool idea. Another way of demonstrating that each picture has many pictures that you can capture. Here your framing so matches the picture that for a moment I thought why is there no drawers behind in the left picture, thinking the top right was the next row. LOL

I love these old catalogue drawers, often wished I had one at home. I love the bottom right pic with the detail of the cards and handle.

great patterns

Fabulous dof and collage. I never liked using card catalogues and I'm glad they have been replace by computers. But they always came in the nicest cabinets. A fav.

Nice patterns

Wow, I really like the one with the drawer wide open!

You've hit the nail on the head with this one Taffy. Just what I had in mind. You can really see the craftsmanship in the bottom left and then you see the scale on the right of that craftsmanship. Look forward to your subject next week.

This is a fabulous collage! love how you used different perspective as well as different light and dof!
February 17th, 2015
Great collage, beautiful subjects, love the DoF in the bottom right image, I''m afraid I'm of a generation that never used a system like this.
February 17th, 2015
Oh, I like this soooo much! I bet the Newberry Library's card catalogue is especially interesting! This is amazing!
February 17th, 2015
A very cleaver collage, it makes the view do a double take.
February 18th, 2015
This is so well done, Taffy. I love your collage and the angle of each photo. Sure brings back memories. FAV
February 18th, 2015
Oh my golly whizz Taffy, this one takes me right back to a different era. I loved the card catalogues, so tactile and full of history in themselves. This is a great triptych and tells the story eloquently. Fav

These make such a great photo subject! The glowing wood, and the repetitions - and I think your selection, especially with some of the drawers pulled out and braking up the pattern showcase it in the best way.
