Another shot with the Sony, but processed in Topaz Textures. These are the last of the flowers in our yard/garden on the island. Potted ones are still blooming, but the rest of the ones have come and gone. Usually I would have left by now to go back to teach -- being retired has advantages!
I was JUST about to ask when your classes started again -- not realizing you had retired. This is the first week of classes here at KS State. How wonderful -- to be able to stay longer on Beaver Island!
@mcsiegle Thank you! I will be up here til after Labor Day which is such a treat. UIC started this week as well. If only my last 5 doc students had finished up last year -- feeling a little anticlimactic at this point since I'm still working with them. But knowing I'm up here tomorrow instead of in the fall faculty meetings feels pretty good!
So pleased you are enjoying your retirement Taffy! Some of my best moments are when the trains are really delayed with bad weather and I am still in bed and no longer commuting to London! A wonderful feeling! Yes Autumn is on the way here too. A lovely capture. Do you like the Sony? Will you be buying one? Fav !
Taffy, I have been retired for eleven years now and life hasn't been so beautiful as these last eleven years. Hope your retirement will be as lovely. Sorry to see these flowers like this - they must have been very beautiful when they had just bloomed.
Your textures just make this gorgeous. What a brilliant idea to rent the Sony. I'll be interested in hearing what you think. I have a Fuji XT-1 and I like it but so much less than my Nikon that I don't use it very often
@jgpittenger I took it out again today, finally figuring out how to set the focus to a single point I can control (not as good as the way I can do it on the Nikon) and I am absolutely sure that this is not the camera for me. The menu screen isn't effective for me as I prefer to have easy access as I'm using the viewfinder, not have to stop, go to menu, and then change things. there is a function key to set, but you'd still have to stop to look at which function I would have set up as you can set up to 12 on the same button. The photos/images are perfectly fine but I just don't have the control that I've come to expect from my Nikon DSLR. I do love the light weight, but I'm giving up to much for quality shots. Very disappointed, but so glad to have rented to sort this out. I'm giving myself up to 2 years to select a new system (if I find one), so am now convinced that renting before buying is smart even if it does end up costing more than I'd want -- it's saving me from investing a lot in a system I wouldn't be happy to use.
@joansmor Funny you should ask this as today I worked a huge chunk of the day on our consulting company. I'm guessing as things settle in for the year, I'll be putting in 2 - 3 days for that but can schedule to accommodate other things. And I have 5 students still at dissertation stage that I want to finish up (volunteering time now for the university which isn't thrilling). Now I"m wondering how I got everything done when I had a full time job! I love being retired (emeritus now) from my university job! Thanks for the visit as always!
@pamknowler I should have tagged you on my note to Jane (see above). I'm in the market for a lighter weight camera but realizing I don't want to trade any of my current Nikon features so am not being realistic. That said, I've decided Sony is not for me for the reasons I wrote above. A nice feel to the camera but just a problem with all the embedded menus. They don't work for me at all. Looks like the Derbyshire trip was wonderful!
Great shot, Taffy. I did not realize you are now retired either. Congrats! If I could buy or rent another camera, Nikon, I would. I have never set a camera aside like this before. I have the basic lenses and a macro lens my son and husband bought for me. There is even a Facebook page that is dedicated to those that use the Sony a6000 that I have but they are way ahead of me. Good for you to check out cameras. When you find what you really like and find ease with you will have to let me know. Feel free to email me: solemdarlene@yahoo.com I definitely trust your judgement and maybe when I get SS next year I will be able to make a change. Definitely disappointed but not totally the reason I have been off and on here. Life keeps me on my toes and I only have so much to give. Take care.
Oh dear, it's such a shame when summer fades and autumn creeps in. Not that I mind autumn, it's the next season I dislike intensely. Love your flower shot, sums up your comment perfectly. Interesting about the camera. I'm loving my Fuji X-T1, haven't touched my Canon since I got it. I'll hang on to the 7DII though, one feature that the Fuji is weak on is bracketing, and I like to do some HDR work at times. The Fuji will get a testing workout on our trip so should be able to report in detail when we're back.
Happy retirement and good luck on the consulting company . I missed that you retired too. Yes, it happened at a good time since you are still waiting to move into your newly bought condo? Have the renters had any luck finding a new place?
@lesip Thanks for the good wishes! Renters have purchased a place but are remodeling it and just told us they won't be out before December 1 at earliest. Very disappointing and we're in the midst of sorting out where we'll live now that Jim has to be back in Chicago for Jim (he hasn't retired yet).
