We were in a beautiful setting in Iceland as you'll see in the related images, on a huge pond with reflections of mountains and rocks. As I turned back from photographing the scenery, I was struck by the SUVs lined up waiting for the photographers, and my husband Jim who was waiting by one of the cars -- can you spot him?
Thank you all for your wonderful comments on my postings so far. I've hit a 'snag' (interpret -- computer crash, massive amounts of tears, some words that cannot be printed here, and about 2 weeks of uncertainty ahead as data recovery is attempted, computer wiped clean and new operating system installed). My biggest worry is losing my LR catalogue and (a) all the work with Pall, our guide/instructor over the last 10 days, or worse, and a little less worrisome (b) being without a way to process photos while waiting to learn my computer's fate.
UPDATE 3/29 afternoon: The university lab guys did it! They recovered my most recent LR backup!!! I have all my work back!!!!!!! THANK YOU for your kind thoughts!
Hoping to figure out a way to continue...

One of our recent speakers at photo club was encouraging exactly what you did- take the shot but don't forget to turn around and see what's behind you. I hope all goes well with the computer. It is certainly a sad and scary position you're in!
I really like this creative composition and the unusual reflections. Not your usual Iceland shot, that is for sure. On the tech side, I am SO sorry about your computer failure and the accompanying anxiety, especially after an amazing trip. If you backed up LR, your data should be safe, but fingers crossed for a successful resolution.
The cars and reflections are really good with that centre horizon, but the lone figure makes the shot more impactful (is that really a word?), maybe I should say 'powerful'. That this shot works so well in b&w is a bit of a revelation that causes me to rethink a few preconceptions.
This could be an ad for SUVs! I do hope you can recover your photos. I know the angst of a computer crash first hand. Mishaps on our Fall trip to the Galapagos included my friend's iPhone being wipe out by a big wave, ruining all her photos and my discovery upon arriving home that one of my media cards with most all my photos of Machu Picchu was missing. It's never tuned up and since we didn't take a laptop, none of the photos were backed up. My big mistake. Try to get some professional help with retrieving your files. You might get lucky.
This is wonderful and so cool in black and white. I am so sorry to hear about your computer - I know how I would feel - we love them when they work, and they are magnificent beasts, but when they take against us it is hard to remain calm! Good luck with the recovery process.
Fantastic image :) fav. Sorry to hear about your computer mine is giving me some problems at the moment as it's keeps freezing which makes processing a chore I guess I shall have to invest in a new one..
Tell me you back everything up on an external drive> My pictures are kept on one external drive and once a week I back up computer and that picture drive onto the larger external drive. So my catalog is backed up once a week. And I don't keep the back up one plugged in all the time. You can buy one for about $100 that has 3T of memory space. That is a ton of back up. If you can afford a cloud service even better. Meanwhile this is beautiful. What a wonderful trip you had.
@joansmor Hi Joan -- thanks for the overview of your system. I'm learning that I need to add one piece to it, after this experience. I do travel with a 4T external drive which is where I import all my photos. I keep one each year and it is backed up every week (or so) to my larger home external drive, along with my computer, using Time Machine. The timing of this was just awful so I'm adding one more layer...if I had backed up my LR catalogue while traveling, backing it up to my travel drive before we left, I would have been fine. The problem was, I turned off my computer on the plane. When we got 'home' (to Junko and Bill's), I had it set up to backup to my main drive and the computer would not turn on. So, if only it had waited another day to break down, I would have had a full backup. The "only" thing I've lost, in the light of day, is my lightroom work from the past 10 days. I have all my raw (.NEF) and .TIFF files on the external drive. I now think if they wipe my computer clean and install the new operating system, get it working, what I'll have to do is restore my files from March 17th (the day we left and last backup), and then import each of the 10 days of photos I have on the external drive. That will recreate the March 27th LR catalogue (I think). I will be without the computer then for 5 days instead of 15, which seems much less catastrophic. Does this make sense to you?
@yaorenliu You're comment was very helpful -- I just loaded my external drive onto Junko's computer to see if all the original photos are there. My only worry now is that I didn't mistakenly upload a day of photos to the computer instead of the drive, but I'm working on sorting that out. I've lost my processing -- but perhaps if I have all the photos imported properly, it won't be the disaster it had looked like. Just work to reconstruct the LR library. So thank you for getting me to think in a different way!
I love your composition and the reflections. Cool capture. I hope you get your computer problems worked out, Taffy, and are able to regain all your data. How awful. I've been backing up my pictures on an external hard drive but your post has reminded me that I better do that again.
Such a fabulous image which would definitely be prefect for a SUV advert!! Love it !! Fav!
Bad news about your computer problems!! I hope you get it all sorted out quickly Taffy and that you don't loose too much of your processing!!
@bella_ss It was truly an amazing country and we loved the range of what we were able to photograph. Very very special, and our guide, Pall, knew where to go and when, so we avoided crowds, had great lighting, and then learned from his guidance at the site and then when processing later. It couldn't have been more perfect! And now, I have my LR file -- our computer geniuses in the lab worked a miracle. The computer may be hopeless, but the file is saved!
Oh that is a good plan. But won't you have lot the LR adjustments you made on the trip because you didn't hae a back up for thee. Though that seems less catastrophic than losing the pictures. Isn't unfortunate that we always figure these things out after a problem arises. And the fear of losing pictures I have taken in a week because of my back up plan is a concern and am trying to remember to do an extra one when I have extra special pics. I though from you post you had lost all of your LR catalog and that just would have been unthinkable. But hey you are an expert at dealing with problems. Oh was that mean.
Great shot, I like to see a different view of the landscape, those reflections are fab.
Hope you get your computer problems sorted, nothing worse than coming home from an amazing trip like this and not having access to all your images.
@joansmor The university computer lab folks were able to recover my backup from Sunday night before we left Iceland! Amazing as they couldn't do it at the Apple store. So, you're right...I did have catalogue backups from each day, but they were on the frozen computer. So, all is now good as they recovered the most recent backup and it's now safely on the loaner computer and functioning fine. Whew!!
I like the perspective here -- behind the scenes. I also think black and white was a great choice for this image. Love it! And it's a relief your computer is safe :)
@bella_ss It was the best decision we ever made for getting the most out of the trip. I'd recommend ours specifically, simply because of his combination of being a professional photographer, sensitive to the fact that we had 2 photographers and 2 who were not so into that part of the trip (he balanced that well), a great instructor, and he knows his country. He made choices based on weather each day as well as the Aurora information. We would not have seen what we had seen at the times we'd seen it on our own.
Great shot! Could be a print ad for SUVs! Glad your LR catalogue was saved! I'm going to have to read the suggestions in the comments for if that happens to me again.

All the best for getting your data recovered - it's such a scary time.
Oh no - sorry to hear about your computer. Hope it has a positive resolution.
Good luck with the computer.
I can't believe you are home already. It looks like you had a great time and you've posted beautiful photos.
Bad news about your computer problems!! I hope you get it all sorted out quickly Taffy and that you don't loose too much of your processing!!
I lived in Iceland for three years, loved it there.
Hope you get your computer problems sorted, nothing worse than coming home from an amazing trip like this and not having access to all your images.
