World Day of Remembrance in Chicago by taffy

World Day of Remembrance in Chicago

A memorial to the millions who have lost their lives in traffic accidents worldwide. In Chicago, this memorial consisted of 132 pairs of shoes, representing the victims here from this past year.
I was taking a photo walk with a friend here from out of town, testing out my Z7 for its first serious use. The good news is, I was quite pleased with its performance. The bad news is, pleasure disappeared on return home when the LED screen suddenly stopped working! Waiting to hear how and when Nikon will replace the defective camera and very disappointed that it happened after a mere 327 photos and one battery use.
Such a moving image. How sad that the screen has stopped working. Fingers crossed they replace the whole camera for you.

Super b&w image of this memorial...I hope Nikon comes through for you.

superb

What an amazing tribute :)

Superb but sadness !
November 20th, 2018
Very moving image Taffy! B&W perfect choice for this sad picture. What a blow about your new camera! So frustrating for you!
November 20th, 2018
Great picture, perfect in b&w.mHowever I'm disappointed about your camera because after you long exchange with @vignouse I was seriously considering Z6, as a present for MY birthday! Keep us informed. Fav for the pic

Great tribute. Fabulous capture.

Sad history and display of shoes...it makes it more real.
I am also so sorry to hear about the shooting at the hospital in Chicago today...tragic. :(

Wonderful

How very poignant

Firstly the image; very poignant and fitting because often road accident victims are forgotten about.

The camera... how disappointing! Nikon have not had a good track record in recent years. I bought a D600 which famously suffered with sensor dust problems and later a D750, the early models of which had a shutter fault... With the Z7 being brand-new there should be no question but they will replace it.

Not a good sign with a new camera.
November 20th, 2018
Great idea - certainly makes you think!
November 20th, 2018
A poignant image, oh my. Well good grief, that’s a huge fail on Nikon’s part.
November 20th, 2018
Great tribute. Shame about the camera, I'm waiting for a Z6 to be delivered so i hope it performs better than your Z7, what a disappointment :(
November 20th, 2018
What a striking way to remember. Sorry to hear about your new camera. Hope it is a mere fault with that particular one and it can be repaired or replaced with the greatest of ease.
November 20th, 2018
Magnificent PoV! Fav! Very poignant in B&W. Hope Nikon remedies their lack of quality asap.
November 20th, 2018
Thought prevoking photo... like your perspective... and sorry about your camera woes!
November 20th, 2018
What a moving memorial- great pov&b&w —so sorry about your camera - I wanted to get my old 3300 fixed with a well known shutter error - it was going to cost more to repair than the camera did 🥴good luck

Taffy, I have to ask, you haven't inadvertently altered a menu setting which has turned the rear screen off... I've done it with my Fuji's?
November 20th, 2018
@vignouse I appreciate your question! I did think of that. I can see through the viewfinder that the menu for the monitor/viewfinder hasn't changed -- checked is the auto-switch as well as all being operational. I had hoped that was it. Also, I tried to click/unclick things though the viewfinder and it isn't operating. Adorama, where I bought it, has sent me a label to return it for full refund/exchange. I'm going with the exchange as I'm hoping that this was a one-off problem. If it happens again, then it's the D600 sensor problem feeling (I had the same issue with mine, and Nikon finally sent me a new D610). I do like Nikon performance, but it does seem their first runs are a problem. But then, so is my MacBook Pro -- I have one where the keyboard jumps all over the place with a mind of its own. Frustrating side of technology.

@caterina A quick update -- the place I bought it has sent me a shipping label to return for full refund or exchange, my choice. I am going with exchange (see note to Richard above). I still like its performance quality in terms of resulting images. Hoping this is a one-off problem, and at the very least that Nikon will continue to stand behind its products if we get a lemon!
November 20th, 2018
@taffy Thank you For your exhaustive response.Maybe I'll wait a little bit before buying the Z6?
November 20th, 2018
A poignant tribute
November 20th, 2018
@caterina I'll let you know what happens with the new one -- if I don't run into any issue, then I think it's safe to assume it was a one-off problem and that it was resolved well. But it will be another week, I'm guessing, before I have the new camera and can run the same kind of test. I know this one broke at 327 images.
November 20th, 2018
Very evocative tribute.
November 20th, 2018
Great looking memorial! News about your camera doesn't sound good
November 20th, 2018
gosh taffy sorry to hear about the camera :( but before its demise, together you produced a crisp and affecting image
November 20th, 2018
How frustrating to be taking photos like this and excited about your new equipment only to have it fail on you- but I'm glad you'll be able to exchange it and keep on going when the new one arrives. This is an excellent shot- I love the pathway of shoes- very touching.
November 20th, 2018
Wow, wonderful remembrance shot.
November 21st, 2018
Great shot !
November 21st, 2018
Wonderful and moving image. So sorry to hear about your camera. I hope it is soon resolved.
November 21st, 2018
Wow... such a powerful shot!
November 21st, 2018
Oh shit! What a total drag and disappointment. Sure hope it’s just an unusual glitch and that you are off and runn8ng again soon. Such a potent image
November 21st, 2018
The person squatting down to add another pair of shoes makes it even more powerful and I like your low pov

@jgpittenger New Z7 just arrived and battery is charging now. Am doing everything as if it is the only camera I own, so only using the stuff that came with it for this first round. Plan to try to take 350 photos through the weekend in hopes that I go through one battery AND that I cannot replicate the problem. It's such a nice camera that I'm really hoping this works! They certainly responded quickly to the issue in terms of getting me the camera in 24 hours.
Thanks for the kind words on this image!
November 21st, 2018
Loving this image Taffy - it's so touching and so very 'Chicago' with Calder's sculpture in the background. I hope you get your camera issues sorted soon though.
November 21st, 2018
Fantastic picture.
November 22nd, 2018
Very poignant image, with regards to the camera, problems should not occur with a camera that expensive but it seems they are quick on the ball with the replacement. Happy shooting with the new Z7
November 22nd, 2018
Beautiful image and a fascinating read on the new camera... looking forward to learning more about how you like the replacement.
November 24th, 2018
Love the line of shoes and your focus on the leading pair with the woman in the distance, my only critique would be could you have cropped it a little tighter on the right hand side? I found my eye wondering off to the right instead of following the line of shoes. But still love it!
November 25th, 2018
@ukandie1 I think cropping from the right could work...will give it a try (but probably unlikely to repost). I thought we were lucky to happen on it.
November 25th, 2018
@taffy am so glad you came upon this, and could document it! Not something that was in the local news, but should have been!
