Spooky shot seemed appropriate tonight. This one was of one of the witches, goblins, and ghosts flying around the ceiling of Stoney Acres, one of the two open restaurants off-season on Beaver Island. My photo today was supposed to be a special shot for #300. But when I went to upload photos to Aperture about 4:00 this afternoon, the entire thing crashed and a decade of photos had disappeared. I hadn't backed up in ages, but for some reason, had decided to do so last night, overnight. For the past 8 hours, I've been keeping my fingers crossed that it would restore, and as I was writing this, it finally popped open. I've lost everything from this weekend, but can reconstruct (minus all the processing) from the smart cards. It looks like all of 365 is still there. And from what I can tell, earlier albums.
The entirely spooky day has taught me (and anyone reading this) a really important lesson. Backing up is critical. Keeping libraries separate and smaller makes more sense than the way I had structured my photos, with one library and many smaller projects. I'm sad at the lost time for the photos from the past few days, but it could have been so much worse. So, I'm off to sleep, will catch up posting this week sometime, and hope that my horrible Day 300 will benefit anyone reading this. Protect your files today!!!!
The image is interesting, but more importantly for today, that Aperture saved your photos in its vault safely!!! So glad to hear this good news. now I can go to sleep, too. :)
Thanks for sharing that Taffy! So sorry you lost your weekend photos, but glad the rest were saved. I just got a message tonight that my disc is full so tomorrow I will back up photos so I don't suffer a similar fate! I always look forward to seeing what you've posted so I'm especially glad you retrieved your amazing collection.
@jyokota Thanks for the support today, Junko! I actually had started to go to bed, but now am in a panic that the photos from this weekend are only on my smart card, so went back to the computer, created a new library, and am downloading them before I go to sleep. Lessons learned...what a day!
This is an excellent shot - as you say, very apt indeed! So sorry to hear about your ordeal. And thanks for sharing to make us all aware. I had a similar some years back...it wasn't photos I lost but assignments which was a complete nightmare! I have kind of learnt my lesson since. I keep an external harddrive, which I keep plugged into my laptop often while I am working on it and make it a point to copy everything as often as possible, but at least one a month - it's a last-day-of the-month ritual. I think cloud storage would be a good idea for extra security, perhaps.
What an amazing shot! Gosh! You were lucky that you did a backup - a premonition perhaps? You have just prompted me to do my weekly backup so that is probably a good thing! At least you got the bulk of it back again.
Oh sorry to hear about your photos, Í´m glad you didn´t lose them all. Yep backing up indeed is something that should not be ignored. I have all my pics in a separate hard drive but if that should get broken, I´d pretty much lose everything....this reminds me, I should buy a new separate hard drive to back up that first one, thank you for the lesson Taffy.
Oh dear, thank you for the reminder, Taffy, gotta back up as well soon. I actually lost about 1/3 of 365 due to external hard drive crash =(((
PS awesome spooky shot!! =))
Very scary - I was lucky that my recent computer trouble did not effect my hard drive. I do back-up but not as often as I should. Love the effect in this shot - sounds like a very fun place.
@angiec Angie, good to know you back up -- but one thought based on my experience. Usually monthly backups work well for me, but I realized with 365 and the daily photos. even losing a weekend has felt very discouraging! You might want to backup routinely more frequently til you complete your project.
@sunraye@ness50 Thanks Raye and Ness! Raye - I'm glad you are busily saving your files (or have already done so!). If my experience saves just a few of others, it will all have been worth it!
