For the alpha-13 theme, adding the letter M to my list. This is the current location of the historic Maxwell Street Market, which first began in the 1880s and continues through today. It's seen shifts in the dominant ethnic groups, from Jewish merchants in the 1800s; African-Americans who, in the 1930s and 40s introduced the Blues to Chicago; and in the 2000s, predominantly Latino. M marks its current location on Desplaines Avenue, about a half-mile to mile from its original location. The original location, BTW, was taken over by the University of Illinois at Chicago which bought up this neighborhood, Little Italy and Greektown.
Chicago still has a Little Italy though, doesn't it? When I was a teenager, my grandpa took me to a part of Chicago that had a lot of German shops... haven't been able to find the place again since, but I loved it.
@jsw0109 It still does -- just smaller. That's where we live now so we can be within walking distance of work (at UIC). Within just a few blocks we have the original Tuscany, Francesca's, and Rosebud restaurants, along with many others. Although now there is also more choice from French, Japanese, Thai, Japanese, and university pubs/bars. Greektown also still exists but instead of a large neighborhood, it's one street of restaurants and shops.
Thanks Annette -- the sky is courtesy of Nik Color Efex Pro 2! It was taken yesterday -- gray, gray, gray. But with the gray sky, the photo was so bland that I thought it needed the oomph of a blue sky.
@ness50 Thanks -- there are days when I feel so lucky to live here (and others where I just wish there were some wildlife -- birds especially -- or mountains and forests!
