I saw a few multiple exposures over the past few days and decided they looked so interesting that I wanted to learn how to do it. I figured out the settings today (yay!) and practiced tonight (not so good). BUT, this one sort of kind of works in that it's not horrible. I have a long way to go, I know! I was trying to capture the harvest of a handful (7 to be exact) of cherry tomatoes on the night before we are leaving (sunset in the background, but over exposed to have enough light on the vine and on my hand in the two shots). I took the vine first where you can see clusters of green tomatoes no where near ripening stage. And my hand second (a selfie, at last, voluntarily!) holding our crop. I think my hand should have been further to the right and not so high, and the vines should have been darker so the green tomatoes would have stood out more. Not to mention the mundane subject matter! But it was exciting to have the final night up here also be about trying something new.
@caroleb Thanks so much Carole! Yes, it turns out there is a setting in the menu called multiple exposure (I was using the Nikon D600 but think it may be on the D90 as well - I'm guessing it's on a lot of cameras). You first turn it on -- I could do a series or just do a single one. I chose the single one. Then I told it to let me take 2 shots -- I could choose 2 or 3. Then all you do is take the first shot. Change settings or location as needed, and take the second one. Except most of my images were just a hodgepodge as the important thing is to plan out where you want each image -- and the camera sees more than you notice, so I always had a ton of junk stuff that I hadn't noticed that ended up ruining all the other attempts. I did have one almost work, of the sunset in the middle of the sunflower! If I can figure out how to load it to flickr, I'll do that and tag you.
@caroleb Okay -- here it is, I think: http://www.flickr.com/photos/taffyraphael/sets/72157635222053192/
You can see that I was trying to get the setting sun to be in the middle of the sunflower, but I photographed it too far over to the right. This was after several tries and the closest I got, so I gave up and switched to the tomatoes and my hand.
@taffy Thanks for the info, and I think your sunflower is kind of neat. I don't think my camera has this function but I will check it out. If not it is too bad because I can think of lots of things I could do with this. Guess I can always do it with photoshop, but this sounds like more fun.
@genealogygenie Keeping in mind that my 'balanced approach' means I've not really be replying, I had to say when I read your comment, I burst out laughing!! I reread what I wrote -- obsessive also comes to mind! You've nailed it. So, thanks for the laugh at the end of the day!
Nice! They are a little difficult to get right at first. I read a tip about using LiveView to help align the second image, but I haven't tried that yet.
Neat first effort! For some reason, my brain wants the hand and tomatoes left, reaching out towards the bush and unripe tomatoes (even though I know, temporally, that doesn't make much sense left to right).
@pamknowler Thanks Pam!! Just look for 'multiple exposures' -- I'm sure your camera has it. Off to work...I'm 23 minutes over my allotted viewing/commenting time!
Very cool! I wish my camera could do this. I'll be back to look at the rest of your photos as soon as I get another 365 break. Having to take an unwanted 365 diet lately:(
Love this. fav. I haven't a clue how it's done, being the novice that I am, but doing a course on photoshop next month so will have a go then. In camera? I must have a look at mine which is canon 650D
@happysnapper65 Quick reply Linda. It's in camera -- a setting in the menu on the Nikon D600 called multiple exposures. I think most DLSRs have this now. Glad you liked it!
@taffy Thanks for replying so quickly. I have looked at my camera and the manual but cant see anything that says multi exposures. I put a search on it in the online manual and still nothing. I am joining a local club this week so will see if they can enlighten me.
