This morning was the first of the 8 Chicago boat runs over the next few weeks. The fall boat runs are held for sailboats with high masts that are harbored in one of the many marinas along our city's Lake Michigan coast. To get to their storage for the winter requires coordinated bridge-raisings starting with the bridge on Lake Shore drive and moving west with the boats until they've reached the storage facilities. In this photo you can see four sailboats navigating the trip. As they move under the bridge, preparations begin for raising the next one. We couldn't have asked for better weather!
A view from one of the bridges looking down the river is in my main album. http://365project.org/taffy/365/2013-09-21
That one was taken at Clark Street and was processed in color. The boat run has occurred for decades and decades as it's the only way the boats can get in and out of the storage areas for the fall/winter. BTW, it's reversed in the spring to let boats move from storage to their marina docks.
An amazing city image, given how busy this street is. I like that you caught the giant thing in the front of the bridge as well. And if you use your imagination, you can see the top of the Wrigley, too.
@jyokota The bridge towers are hard to capture, I think. They either totally dominate, or they look uninteresting. I'm glad you liked it. Who knows...if we can coordinate, maybe we can get to one of the next runs when you're back in town??
@taffy -- when is the next run? I'm back Saturday night and heading into the city on Sunday to catch the Art Institute exhibit --- and in town til we go to NYC.
