We drove 27 miles on incredibly rough roads in off-road Jeeps (I drove one of the three!) for about 3 hours to get to Racetrack Playa. It's a huge expanse of patterned mud/sand with mysterious moving rocks (see sunset photo http://365project.org/taffy/365/2015-01-17 for more explanation). As we were setting up, it was tricky avoiding each other in person or in shadow. The shadow is @jyokota and me with our tripods. Our instructors (Brian Matiash and James Brandon are setting up at the rock and another student is getting reach to shoot in the other direction.
@ladygator Thanks! I'd been hearing about the moving rocks in the Playa at the start of the course. In the end, when I saw them, I had to totally adjust how I'd been thinking about photographing them as the key is their path -- not at all how I'd been thinking about them! It was really fun.
A marvellous place to have the opportunity to photograph. This shapes and patterns on the ground are just fascinating. I'm finding my shadow a real problem when I try to take photos on the bright winter days we're getting at the moment.
@bill_fe We wouldn't likely see them move -- the mystery of how they moved was only recently solved via video over a long period. I'm guessing some of them have been in that spot for decades.
How can I NOT FAV this one? :) Surely I am the tall one with long legs on the left and not the rectangular block on the right. . . . nobody will ever know.
