New Lens!!!! by taffy

New Lens!!!!

No need to comment...just posting this as I'm very excited with my new (to me, previously owned) lens that arrived this afternoon. I'm downsizing from 3 lenses to one and I think it's going to work well. This is the 28-300 Nikon. Both photos were taken standing in the same place -- the arrow in the top one is pointing to the small section (little heart around it) that I zoomed in on to take the lower image. Bonus -- didn't notice that Skybridge is in the background -- a unit toward the top is where we hope to move back!
The lens is supposed to handle macro too, and seemed pretty good at it in other experiments today.
Good for you. Looks nice and sharp

So exciting to get a new lens, and this one has such a good range, it would be great to travel with.

Amazing range! I just rented a lens for upcoming trip to London, so I can have more travel flexibility without having to commit to an unknown. Time will tell.

WOW...very cool! Did I miss something? Move back to the city?

Impressive lens! I'm thinking you'll have no trouble falling in love with it.

@rosiekerr What range did you rent? I sent my 70-200 with 2X converter, 70-300 and 24-85 to sell to the company I bought this one from. I didn't mail them off til I knew I'd want to keep this instead. So might lighter to have one lens instead of 3 or 4. I'll probably still carry a 50mm as this one is an f3.5-5.6, so a slower lens with less low-light flexibility. BUT, still so worth it (and I'm keeping my 14-24 f/2.8). It feels like the right choice based on all of one photo walk.

@eyesmile No, nothing missed...we just decided that even though our place is now beautiful and exactly how we designed it, we need to move to someone that is on one level -- before we HAVE to make that kind of move. And, the landlord of our rented condo is working with us so that we can hopefully buy that place (in Skybridge -- the high rise in the photo) when we sell ours. Lots of things need to fall in place, but it's not impossible.

Love all three of your shots, Taffy - really shows what that lens can do on right out of the box - give you a week and you'll have its sweet spots all worked! Sounds like an excellent choice for your location - always have everything covered..

How exciting is that!!! It sounds like the perfect all around lens to take anywhere with you! It certainly should be easier on your shoulders and neck, and I love the fact that it has macro, too!! Fun, fun...

Yay!

@taffy wish We had same camera mounts. I need a couple of what you are selling!

@darylo That would have been so good -- the one thing about trading in my equipment is how little I actually get back compared to what they sell them for. I'd rather have seen 365 friends get a good deal on them than a corporation!

Wow! Enjoy the new lens!

Great lens Taffy, enjoy.

An amazing 'stretch'. Enjoy your new lens. Looks as if it's going to be a great success.

@taffy I rented the Oly 12-40mm (which is 24-80 mm on my camera). It has a constant f2.8 throughout the zoom... very exciting. :) I am hoping it works for all of the London architecture/buildings/street scenes, so I don't have to keep changing lenses. Three weeks of rental was very reasonable, especially compared to buying one. "Borrowlenses.com"

@rosiekerr That should be a great range for London. It should take you from the palaces and plazas to the views from the London Eye quite readily. I wish I'd known about renting lenses 10 years ago. I suspect I would not have bought one or two of the ones I owned but would have just 'borrowed' them as needed.

Wow that is so exciting! Congrats with the new lens and it seems like your going to have lots of fun with it!

Great sharp image even while zoomed..a great purchase!

I am using Tamron with the same range, and while it was doing fine on my old camera, I've noticed such a difference since I switched from D5100 to D7200. I don't seem to get it sharp at all if I zoom past 200 or so. But I love the range and got so used to not switch lenses all the time I want to have a different perspective on something. Congratulations on the new lens!

Sounds like a good lens! :)

amazing sharpness for a all-in-one lens

28-300 sounds like a good move to me. Downsizing to one lens is tempting. I sometimes carry 3 lenses around with me, along with my 'go to' 28-135 lens. It gets jolly heavy! Love your shots, showing what you've done.

Good idea to downsize!

I have two lens and I really like each for there own thing. But I don't like carrying them both so I tend to take the one that will suit the situation. Good luck with the new one.

Looks like you've made a good move with this lens. It does a great job.
October 12th, 2015
This is very timely Taffy as I was going to ask what is the best all round lens to bring for city photography. I cannot carry all my lenses around and need to decide if I need a new one. My best lenses are all very heavy! I am Canon and I know you are Nikon so not sure if you can help. I need to do some research before I come.

@pamknowler -- Hi Pam, I'm a Canon user. Since you are coming for a week and making it a BIG excursion, I would recommend you bring the best lenses you own: a wide angle, mid-range, telephoto, and if possible one for nighttime photography. Your hotel is so conveniently located you can take a lens or two for the day, and return to get a different one for the evening. Here in NYC, I am using mostly my 24-70 during the day, and my 35mm f/2 during the evening. I have used my 70-200 f/4 for the statue of liberty shot, but I haven't used my wide angle yet. We tend to return to the hotel once during the day to rest and change lenses and get warmer evening clothes.

@jyokota thanks for that Junko - really useful! My big question to myself is should I bring my 100-400 with me ? My favourite lens but it is so heavy. Lots to think about.
October 13th, 2015
@pamknowler Hi Pam, I don't know if Junko's already responded, but she and I talked about this in NY and neither of us could think of a reason to carry the 400.
October 15th, 2015
@taffy the 400 is a definite no. I am bringing the 24-70 and probably the 70-200 with a teleconverter. I think my 50mm might find its way into the bag too. I do have other wider angle lenses but not really used them so not sure if I need them. The 24-70 was what I used in Cardiff and it is a lovely lens although heavy. If I could only bring one lens that's the one I would bring. I would love a fish eye but not sure I can justify buying one just for Chicago and I don't think I would use it where I live.
