More Indigenous Rock Art

Day 18 - Anbangbang (previously Nourlangie), Kakadu NP

The information board accompanying these aboriginal rock paintings said that the paintings in this gallery were more recent examples of local indigenous rock art and were probably less than 1000 years old. The Anbangbang gallery is considered to be one of the most culturally significant in Kakadu.

In trying to find out the significance of these paintings and what they depict, I came across this statement:
The artworks are sometimes repainted, but only by those qualified with the knowledge of the paintings’ stories. Repainting is a powerful act that puts a person in touch with the Creation Era or the essence of the creature being painted.

So this explains why some of the paintings look so recent.

Amazing rock paintings, lovely colours and textures. One of our rock paintings by the indigenous San or Bushmen is believed to be the oldest known instance of human art dating 73,000 years ago.
