When we were in Kakadu 23 years ago, the highlights for us were Yellow Waters at sunrise and Ubirr at sunset and we planned to do both of these again this trip. We managed Yellow Waters but were very disappointed to discover that Ubirr was closed.
The reason given was that the road into Ubirr was still closed after the wet but our pilot told us that one of the aboriginal elders had died and that they were not even allowed to fly over it.
We had seen a couple of stories recently about the future of tourism in Kakadu and I would say that based on what we saw and experienced this trip, the future does not look bright. The various stake holders really need to come to an agreement on how each of the parties often competing requirements can be met in the future.
