Dance Like No One is Watching 3

Day 23 - Cloncurry to Barcaldine

We spotted some brolgas in a paddock and pulled up to get some shots of them when suddenly, one of them started dancing.

The Brolgas dancing is legendary but this was the first time I had ever seen it. WooHoo!!!!!

It was fantastic and went on for quite a while as the flock gradually moved away from the road.

The dance is quite elaborate with all sorts of choreographed moves including strutting, wing flaps and leaping a metre or so into the air. It seems as if the scientists have not worked out yet why they dance with the most likely reason being that they dance because they can. One article I read concluded by saying that if you wanted to find out why they dance, you would probably need to ask a Brolga.

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFNdd9yyyTU for a video clip of their dance

Ha. Friends of ours have a sign that says that in their kitchen; I've always loved it and this title is perfect for the photograph
