Blackall

Day 24 - Barcaldine to Roma

Just over 100kms from Barcaldine is the very neat and tidy town of Blackall - population 1,400.

I have mentioned on a number of occasions during our travels how impressive most of these small outback towns are and how much civic pride is on display and Blackall was no exception.

We got a cup of coffee from the local bakery (and were served by the Mayor of Blackall) and while we were drinking our coffees (and I was eating a meat pie that the Mayor had forced upon me 😁) we started talking to a young couple of backpackers.

They were from the US and were stuck in Blackall for a few days after their car broke down and the local garage was waiting for parts to arrive from Brisbane. We commiserated with them for their bad luck but they were adamant that all was good, they were enjoying their enforced stop over and that all the locals had been extremely welcoming and were really looking after them.

People out west are like that.

If Blackall's mayor ever needs a vacation, you could certainly take over the job. Or at least, run the Chamber of Commerce.

I love small towns like this. We have many near where I live and the pie in the local cafes is usually very good!

I so agree Terry... over the years we have visited most of the towns you have travelled through & found the local people so friendly. Now they have come through hard times & the are as we say in OZ "the salt of the earth."

It does look like a pretty town, folks normally tend to be more hospitable in these little places.

@pusspup LOL. Nope. It's a fossilised tree stump which was found on a local property. The stump is a conifer and is related to the hoop pines of today. No one is sure how old it is with estimates ranging from one million to 225 million years old.
