The Breakaways - Papa

Still at the Breakaway Conservation Park, 35 kms north of Coober Pedy.
According to the legend of the local Antakirinja Mutuntjarra tribe, this unique landform is known as Papa or two dogs. To the traditional people, it is two dogs sitting down, a white one and a brown one. To non-aboriginal people, it is called The Castle or Salt and Pepper.
Even though they are joined, the difference in the colouring of the two hills has been caused by different rates of weathering and erosion. The white hill has weathered faster than the brown hill.

How interesting that they have weathered to give such different colours yet they are similar shapes. Great shot of this strange natural formation.

Eye-catching landscape features for sure. Thanks for sharing the origins of the various names these landforms are known as. That sort of stuff is always interesting to me.

Ha ha - I wonder if you can say that tribe's name really quickly over and over. These hills are amazing, and great story too.
