Gibber Plain by terryliv

Gibber Plain

Part of the Sturt Stony Desert, this area of the Birdsville Track is referred to as the Gibber Plain. Don't know if gibber is just an Oz word or not but it is another word for a largish stone or a small rock.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why they call it the Stony Desert. Great shot of it too.

I've never heard the word "gibber," and we have plains of stones like this as well, so my guess is that it is an Australian term. I had a friend once who visited Perth for about six weeks, and she and her hosts had great fun misunderstanding each other. She regaled us with many examples upon her return.
