The Old Ghan by terryliv

The Old Ghan

Marree was one of the major stations on the old Ghan railway between Adelaide and Alice Springs. When the new line was built in the 1980s and extended to Darwin, Marree was bypassed.

There are a number of these old Ghan diesel locos in the park at Marree. Of course, the name "The Ghan" was a derivative of Afghan and was a tribute to the Afghan cameleers of the past.

The old Ghan was extremely unreliable because of washouts on the track etc. The story goes that it once set a world record when it pulled into Alice Springs at the right time, on the right day, but a month late. LOL

After being 3 weeks behind, I have finally caught up. My apologies for the (sometimes) 6 shots a day and for the sporadic comments but with over 4000 photos to go through and decide upon, it has been bloody hard work. I always find it very hard to separate the 365 worthy photos from the happy snaps that form an important part of the trip

Great capture and story of the Ghan! It is on my list to do - the new one that is! Congratulations on catching up - it certainly is a big task. I've enjoyed your trip - thanks :)

This is so interesting Terry! It sounds like the Ghan was just as bad as British Rail when I was commuting to London every day! Reasons for delays - leaves on the lines and/or the wrong kind of snow! Thanks for sharing thus wonderful trip with us I have, really enjoyed travelling with you! Great capture! Fav!

Interesting looking train, it looks like it is built to deal with anything. Great information also.

Fabulous shot and loved your story. Australia Post is going the same way, ha ha Oops shouldn't have said that. It took 11 days for a parcel to go from Newcastle to Melbourne recently when I sent it to my grandson.

This is fascinating -- both the shot and your narrative explaining it.
