The first tree we planted when we moved in to this new build was a small amelanchier, which has never attracted moss until this year. Is it lockdown-related, global warming, or could it be the boiler outlet pipe, recently installed by the new owners of the house at the bottom of our garden, which pours warm steam over our little tree? Oh well, at least it’s pretty moss.
Moss only grows where the conditions are right for it so perhaps it's just taken this long for the tree to be the perfect spot?! It's a nice addition, in my opinion, and moss doesn't cause any damage to trees. It could be the boiler steam though - perhaps that's just created the right level of moisture for moss.
