Don't hate on me too hard for this one, it is an experiment! I watched a few videos on editing for a high contrast desaturated urban image this afternoon and this is my take on it! I don't think I like it, it seems to pushed for me, but it was fun trying something different. What do you think?
@skipt07 thanks so much Skip for your encouragement. I think sometimes I get so caught up in my contrasty b&w style that when I try something else it seems contrived. This year I am trying to not always fall back on what is comfortable!
I like it Andie! It has a much more gritty feel to it than Taffy's image. Such different perspectives even though you were in the same spot. It's good to try different things to take us out of our comfort zone! Fav!
I really like it. Good for you, to try things that push you out of your comfort zone. I will have to take a look at this technique, because I really enjoy how much of the image is desaturated, but the urban pops of color remain. You have maintained your native "contrasty" style beautifully.
I like it too, especially the way the train is all shiny in the light. It's great that you are getting out of your comfort zone - I think that's what this place is all about!
I've really enjoyed looking at this image - I've come back several times to do just that - but I still don't know if I like it! Has to be a Fav for its literal attractiveness and a great experiment on your part. I'm definitely in a rut at the moment... and somebody once said to me that a rut is best defined as a shallow grave ;-((
@vignouse your comments about keep coming back to this image, but still unsure if you like it was exactly how I felt! I dithered about posting it, but figured nothing ventured, nothing gained and I wanted to know others opinions!
@vignouse thinking on your comment about being in a rut, definitely been there for the months leading up to and after Xmas. One of the things that has bought me out of the rut is a decision to work on a project that is not involved with online, something I have given myself 4 months to complete, and that I intend to print 6 to 12 images from. A new venture for me :)
@ukandie1 There's another adage that says 'If you keep on doing what you keep on doing, you'll keep on getting what you keep on getting!' I just last night delivered all the files for a batch of images that will form part of an exhibition on 'Birth', in collaboration with the local maternity hospital. I had the huge privilege of photographing several births both natural and by caesarian section - they were awesome to photograph. The only problem is that it left little time for 365 so I've been under-performing here... and under-commenting ;-(( I need to rethink where I'm going with my photography.
Good luck with your project... and I've decided that I do like this image!
hope andie you don't mind me mentioning to richard @vignouse that his project sounds so interesting - will we see any of the fruits of your labours (haha) on here richard?
i love this shot andie - and have tried some high contrast desat urban myself in the past. i think it works so well with this image - seems to provide a real clarity, and make certain elements pop
Fabulous capture - I love the lines & patterns, the light & shade, the detail of the tracks, facades etc. and the shot draws you and down the line! A super fav.
@vignouse that's a lovely thought richard. sadly i have quite a few travel plans at the moment so i won't be able to see the exhibition - but i really hope it goes well, and look forward to hearing :)
I would be worried if you liked it Andie! For me, experimenting, taking myself out of my comfort zone, is vital whatever my favourite genre and style. I have reached the stage when I am concerned when people say 'i knew that was yours the moment I saw it!' With the XT2 you are well placed to expand the horizons... all those gorgeous lenses you can buy! :-)
Good luck with your project... and I've decided that I do like this image!

I think it looks great.
Any chance you have the link to the videos?
Be very interested to have a look!
