"I am your father..."

Ok, to shake things up completely, today a shot solely by request of my son, who recently realised that there is something like Legography. The original is found here: http://nowiknow.com/wp-content/uploads/luke_i_am_your_father.jpeg Enjoy and have fun. As always, comments and critique are very much appreciated!
P.S. And, also by request of my son, I am supported to tell everyone that Luke's right hand IS missing, although you don't see it.
To quote my 12 year old grandson, "Wow".

Another "wow" from me too! :D

Pretty small aperture at f/22 but with a high ISO. I would have shot at a wider aperture (f/4, f/5.6) for a more shallow depth of field. But, focused on the black legos and maybe reposition the shot so that Vader, Luke, and the black legos are all in a parallel line to the front of the lens. That way the subjects are in focus, with out of focus background, foreground...

As is, it looks like your focus was on vader... this gives Luke a slightly blurred look as he is out of the plane of focus, or out of the depth of field.

@adambralston
Thank, Adam! @adambralston You got it right!
I had the same thought - to shoot it with wider aperture to make the background blurry and the figures stand out more. But - positioned on one line, they did look a bit flat, which I would have lived with happily, but.... Unfortunately, the 7-year old director has not learned to compromise yet, and insisted that the figures would be positioned in the way so that the picture turns out as close to the original as possible. :) And so, my blurry background idea went out of the window. I also tried to move the background a bit, but it was just an A4 size paper with a picture we pulled out of the Internet, and was not big enough to be positioned too far.
Thank you for taking time to think about all that and comment! I appreciate it very much.

A very original image Vera. I am sure that your son is very happy with the result. Well captured.

@vera365 It looks great. As a nerd myself, and Star Wars fan, I was going to comment that this positioning does actually more closely follow the position of the subjects in the film as well :) But then I held back. HOWEVER, in the film, the backdrop is also out of focus!

YOU know though, you wouldn't have to change the positioning necessarily though. Even with a wider aperture the depth of field would change depending on where the focal distance is in this shot. From the same focal distance, changing the shot to macro setting, or focusing on a spot somewhere between the figures in depth from the front of the lens would still give you equal balance of focus in front of the spot and behind the spot in focus. Changing the aperture (or using a chart like on iphones) would tell you how deep that DOF would be in order to give you focus enough in front of and behind the subject to still get the subjects focused and the background out...

Anyway, lovely shot and nice experiment. AND WAAAAAAAY better than my one attempt to something similar... A Hoth battle sequence shot .... http://365project.org/adambralston/365/2014-02-02 Don't judge too harshly, it was early in my project. I think I have learned more since then...

@adambralston
Wow, I have to show it to my son when he wakes up, he will be waiting for the next snow to take all of his lego men/clones/troopers/creatures out to shoot that! Great capture!

Your suggestion makes sense too! I am sure with his enthusiasm about the whole thing, we might be shooting Star War seems regularly. As I was trying to finish up with this shot, he started to build a Jabba's Palace from scratch, completely ignoring the existence of the already assembled giant one.

Thank you Derek! Unfortunately for me, he was happy. He already submitted to me a list of his other immediate ideas, such as setting up Lego people in various danger situations - running away from fire spitting dragons or monster trucks threatening to run them over. I am in for a long haul on this, it looks like!

@vera365 He sounds awesome!
HEY, you know what you can try as well? Use your computer screen as kind of backdrop... like a blue screen of sorts. I've done that with a few shots ...

You can get some interesting effects from that as well.
Shot this one of a dinosaur in front of a screen saver shot with shallow DOF --- http://365project.org/adambralston/365/2014-04-06

And this one with bounty hunters in the front and a backdrop I made myself (long story, but it is basically food stain on my glass counter oven, with added stars and colors). http://365project.org/adambralston/365/2014-05-26

Anyway, both used the computer screen as a backdrop for the subject that was positioned in front. I'd be interested to see what you do with that! :)

Also, I don't want you to think all I shoot is toys. You can flip through my project and see that ;)

Thanks for the ideas, Adam! It will definitely spice up our toy photo shoots! I very much like the star bust effect in the galaxy picture! @adambralston

Facebook-e http://aleksandrpetrosyan.com/en/
