With the clouds scudding nicely across the sky and enough wind to turn Paimpont Lake into a sea of wavelets, I figured this would be a good afternoon to take some long exposure shots of Paimpont Abbey viewed from the far side of the lake.
Set-up was easy and my adjustable 10-stop ND filter was soon in place on the lens; I guessed at a 2 minute exposure for starters. When the image appeared on the preview screen it was virtually obscured by large distorted shadows; subsequent attempts were no better. In the end (confirmed by further tests at home) I had to put it down to the poor quality of the filter although it wasn't a cheap one. In the past I have only used it partially stopped down when the problem doesn't occur - but there's not much point in having a 10 stop ND filter if you can't use all 10 stops.
This is a regular image that I took at the beginning of the session as a control image and, in the event, that's all I have to offer today :-(
Gorgeous and is your usual. Does definitely pop on black. Can you recommend a source for good information on how to use (or in my case) learn to use ND filters? Fav!
@joysabin Thanks Joy - I wish I did know of a good tutorial... I could use some help myself! I'm sure Mr Google will come up trumps if you ask nicely ;-))
It should have been a good subject for long exposure - a real shame about the filter. I find trial and error is the best way to do it!! Lots of error but generally get some good ones.
Interesting story, about the filter. I had some problems years ago with a polarizer, and I would like to buy a good nd, but now I'm reconsidering the possibility... your photo is excellent nonetheless!
