Granville Street in Vancouver has some wonderful old neon signs. Sadly there's not as many as there once were -- in the 40's and 50's it was believed to have more neon than anywhere other than Shanghai -- but there's still plenty around.
Complex neon signs are all hand-made, and it's an extremely skilled industry. Sadly, with the advent of boring, mass-produced fluorescent signs and LED displays, neon signs, which are unreliable and expensive to maintain, are being slowly consigned to the junkyard.
Taken while driving down Granville Street with the camera mounted to my tripod, which is securely wedged behind the seats. Lens is the Sigma 10-20mm, manually focused, at 10mm. Sadly the tripod picked up some vibration which means that the photos aren't as sharp as I'd like. Set-up shot is here: http://yfrog.com/h3rixiqlj

Wonderful creative shot! Fantastic colours! So cool! :) (by the way, the Museum of Vancouver has an exhibit of old neon signs from around the city right now, it's well worth checking out, if you haven't already!)
Would love to try a rig shot one day - though not on my car. ;)
