Tonight was the annual Vancouver tree lighting ceremony, which takes place in Jack Poole Plaza outside the convention centre.
An arctic front has moved in across much of the west coast of North America, causing temperatures to be much lower than usual. Tonight the temperature was -6°C, with wind chill making it feel like -10°C. Despite this, there was an excellent turn-out for the ceremony.
The fifty foot tree was lit just before 7:00pm, and before and after the lighting there were performances by local musicians, as well as presentations to many local charities. The lighting even coincided with a very opportunistic appearance by the moon (after a quick adjustment of my tripod location, anyway!)
After standing out with my tripod for an hour, I was so cold I could barely kneel down to pack my gear away!

I long for some COLD cold weather.... We get a few mornings of it..have had some days in the 20s..but I want some artic blast weather! This photo has it all! Lots to look at!
fabulous capture of the tree lighting. the colours are beautiful! i suppose we had ours here, too, but just not aware of it. i know the circus at city hall is still on-going though probably why i'm not really keen on going around there.
Beautiful, oh, so beautiful....the tree actually feels dwarfed by the tall buildings (which, by the way, are exquisitely rendered!) surrounding it. So much detail and color everywhere... and, I really like the throngs of people in the shadows in the foreground. Another great picture...
What dedication, Alexis, in the cold to get this superb shot. Love all the different colours in the buildings around the Plaza and of course the tree in centre position. As I was looking at this, Ray came past with our artificial tree out of the loft to be decorated which will be a very very low key affair in comparison!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fav for yours!
Love what you did to the even more sparkle image - my Christmas wish - to follow you around and watch you setup and do your shots, creepy I'm sure, but your talent amazes me and I would love to see these locations you go to in person as well.
