I thought it was odd that I'm an astronomer by training, but had never been to Greenwich observatory... so we rectified that on our holiday with a visit :) We had a great afternoon seeing some of the timepieces that changed the world by improving navigation, and then took in this amazing sunset on our way back... (I used the 'vivid' setting on the camera, but otherwise it's unedited).
Lovely shot , and a nice reminder of one of of my favourite places. I lived close by for many years and just beforeI retired I did the Bkue Badge Guide course at the local college, which was quite entrhralling, with privileged access to some of the placres not usually open to public view .... and then I moved away .... bad timing, just as the Millennium preparations were under way!
Have you been to Armagh Observatory? My dad lived there for a few years when he was young, my grandmother was housekeeper. I talked my way into the place when my aunt took me there a few years ago (she is 16-17 years younger than my dad so it was new to her too) - we were shown around by one of the astronomers there
What a gorgeous sunset
So gorgeous it was an instant fav- love the steeple in there. I entertained the thought of going into astronomy for a very short while as I loved star gazing. But I do not have a head for math and when I learned about all the chemistry I'd have to take, I decided to stick with viewing for pleasure and awe instead. I did take one astronomy class in college with a great professor who knew that most of us were not adept in the sciences. My final project was a children's book about a space traveler who comes through our galaxy backwards. It was a great class and I still count seeing Saturn through a telescope for the first time as one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
@filsie65 Yep, two degrees in astrophysics :) @wordpixman The blue badge course sounds like it would have been fascinating! @lbmcshutter I've never made it to Ireland, though I really want to... @olivetreeann There are lots of online astronomy courses now, with less chemistry and maths in them :) Saturn and Jupiter have a certain magic when you see them for yourself and they really do look like the photos...
