Plague cottage in Eyam

Yesterday we visited Eyam.

Plague cottage in Eyam. In the 1660s, plague arrived in fabric brought up from London for the tailor who lived in this cottage. The villagers quarantined themselves from neighbouring towns to prevent plague spreading. 260 villagers died, but the plague didn't spread from there.
They got food and provisions left at the boundary stones for them, and left money soaked in vinegar to disinfect it.
Scientists now thing that a genetic mutation (Delta 32) might have helped some people to survive while others succumbed to the disease. The museum is well worth a visit if you're in the area.

It's a sad story but I think they are to be admired for what they did to not spread the disease. No one would be that altruistic these days.
