Today we went to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to see some Tasmanian Devils (and other creatures).
The sanctuary houses a back-up population of devils (to help protect against Devil Facial Tumour Disease), as well as looking after devils who are orphaned when their parents are killed by cars, or injured in the wild. The sanctuary is also home to animals surrendered after long lives as pets or in zoos, or who are too injured or habituated to humans to return to the wild. Entry fees support the rescue and rehab work too.
The tassie devils are so cute - but you only have to hear them fighting over food, or imagine what they'd look like in a flash of torchlight in the dark to realise why early colonists called them devils!
