At work (and behind her back) we sometimes call my colleague auntie - which in Asian culture is a polite term for someone who is a little older than you... If she was about the same age, she'd be sister... If she was much older, she'd by mother... You get the idea...

I can remember when all my parents' friends became honorary aunts and uncles automatically,. I never called an adult by their Christian name, it wasdeemed very rude.
@june Your right - I'd completely forgotten that.. My parents always made me call their friends auntie or uncle or Mr & Mrs Whoever, never by their first name...
