Very cool capture. Did you hang around to see how he managed to get it down? I've noticed that for heron's sometimes the catching seems to be easier than the swallowing.
@gardencat This eel slipped down ok but I stood a couple of days later and watched another heron try to swallow a salmon it had captured from the salmon run and it tried for about 25 mins and had to give up in the end!
